https://www.mmafighting.com/2017/11...kly-stops-shinya-aoki-retirement-fight-at-one Superb talent. He was arguably the best Welterweight in the world for the last 5 years but we'll never know for sure. How do you guys fancy his chances against the past 4 Welterweight champs in Woodley, Lawler, Hendricks and of course GSP?
Considering the fact he completely dominated Lima and Koreshkov who are themselves top 10 Welterweights - Pretty damn good I'd say.
Impressive win despite Aoki being a lightweight and being well past his best he is still the biggest name win Askren has had,the Lima win in 2012 was probably his best win along with probably Koreshkov. Its a shame he never really got to test himself against any of the best Welterweights and his career will be 1 of the great what if storys.I've never been a fan of his but he has been a clear top 10 fighter the last 4-5 years and its a shame we probably wont get to see him in the UFC basically because of his boring style of fighting .
He's talked about it for a while now so it's not a surprise but it's still disappointing. I would've have liked to have seen what he could've done in the UFC the last few years.
He would have beaten a lot of top 10 fighters but it probably just wouldn't have been that great to watch. There is no real excuse for him not to at least be given the opportunity in the UFC considering sum others far more boring and nowhere near as skilled as Askren.
My gut is that he beats the past 4 champions during that time. His striking is nonexistent but his grappling is damn good that he can win on that alone. Woodley also struggled with Shields spoiling tactics and Askrin is WAY better other than the submission threat. Hendricks and Lawler are hot and cold and GSP wasn't feeling it at the time..... Considering what Lima and Koreshkov went on to accomplish and the fact Askrin COMPLETELY dominated them.... Askren at the very least has been a top 5 Welterweight the past 4-5 years.
Semantics. They were both good fighters who proved their class not too long after Askrin completely manhandled them. Now they're top 10 fighters and the only guys to beat them since Ben did the deed was each other.
Sure those wins look good now in hindsight which is what I said but don't blow them up into something they are not.Koreshkov is good but apart from Lima hasn't fought anybody apart from blown up Lightweight Henderson and is not in any top 10 rankings just like he wasn't when Askren beat him.The Lima win which I think was his best at the time and looking back looks better also was not then and is not now in most of the independent top 10 rankings even tho I think he should be along with getting a UFC contract.
Who's blowing them up to beat something they're not? Both are very good fighters and almost certainly top 10. It's the fact that Askren COMPLETELY dominated them that's important..... As opposed to the wins alone. Also I don't give a rats ass about the political UFC centric ratings that are clearly biased to good fighters in other orgs.
I would say he capable of beating all of them but I think he beats Hendricks easily especially post USADA Hendricks, Lawler would have a chance but if he wasn't at his best Askren would wrestle**** him for 5 rounds and win easily on points.Despite not liking Woodley I think he beats Askren on most occasions by being able to frustrate him stuffing all his takedown attempts and potentially even stopping him .GSP in his prime would be far to good for Askren and even now I think he beats him 9 out of 10 times
You probably dont give a rats ass about this either but I agree with pretty much everything you said apart from how high in rankings Koreshkov should be and how good he is.Lima is most definitely a Top 10 no matter what the rankings say and I think he should be in the UFC,he has an exciting style and finishes opponents
