I don't know in Wood's case. With Warrington yeah, he was totally wiped out and outdone but in the case of Wood he just got too confident for a brief moment, he was more than holding his own and almost certainly up on the cards at the time of the stoppage.
Tbf mate i,ve not seen the fight....only read the round by round and seen the finish. But the fellas heavy handed if you get knocked out like that its never really wise to go back in with them immediately after more so if their heavy handed like that. Understand woods 31 now so in a bit of a hurry. But for me you probably need something to get back in again. A couple of great performances or a massive confidence building win against warrington. If he had no other option fair enough. But warrington seems a very good sensible option atm. At least you know hes not gonna knock you out cold or really hurt you. Personally wouldnt put him in immediately after. But can see it from both arguments tbh.
Whether right or wrong, Ben will be absolutely loving this as now the entire fight has been made about him
I didn't think the towel should have come in - if he was 24 year old middleweight and not a 34 year old featherweight then maybe I could understand it. But still the bigger disappointment is having Davison as his trainer in the first place. If Leigh gets shut of him right away then I think he could still have a great end to his career.
Its a sport, its not bareknuckle gypsy fighting, he was beaten and about to get punished, gutting yeah, but to call what Davison did wrong or selfish is ridiculous.
Wood looked completely ****ed and the ref clearly didn't wave the fight off due to him being a Brit and about to lose his world title. I can't read people's minds through my TV, but I could almost see the ref weighing it up. The towel was perfect That being said... I am a boxing fan. I want to see people triumph against the odds. I want to see blood and carnage. I want to see fighters leave a piece of themselves in the ring. I want Joe Frazier to fight round 15 in Manilla. I worship those photos of people covered in gore in the 1900s after 45 rounds of boxing. This is a sport where intangibles are far more meaningful than in any other sport. So I want Leigh to clinch, get back on his stool and grind it out But hey, I'm not a boxer. I've been punched in the face about 5 times in my life and the only boxing I do is on the heavy bag at the gym. These decisions are for those there on the night
Damn, wood's 34. The perm made me think he was around 30 at the most. Makes the decision by boxercise ben even stranger.
more understandable you mean. they need to make the most of his time as a fringe world level fighter, if saving him from a brutal KO now means a Wood-Warrington fight next year and another title shot after should he win, it’s worth it (I hope that fight can be made instead of another pointless rematch)
before he hooked up with Davidson he was dropping decisions to Jazza Dickens I don’t like a lot of things Ben does (his work with Josh Taylor especially) but it’s become fashionable to criticise him no matter what
Ben Davison 100% made the correct call. It was a heavy knockdown and when Wood got up his legs weren't underneath him and you could tell by his face he wasn't there either. We've seen what Lara can do to opponents with 10 seconds left to go in a round and Wood was done... he's even since said so himself. If Davison had let that go on then there is no doubt in my mind Wood would've been sent to Timbuktu.
It's been obvious since day 1 the guy was a fraud, I haven't started criticising him since it apparently became fashionable. Although it doesn't surprise me, you don't have to be a boxing expert to listen to the guy talk for 5 minutes and realise he's a complete chancer blagging his way through. I was just glad I didn't travel to Scotland when BJS fought Akavov, and thankfully Billy soon recognised he needed a real trainer. Same realisation from Fury and Taylor. Just hope we get the same thing from Wood before it's too late.
