It's an interesting one. IF Ben Davison tries to turn Taylor in to BJS/Fury out-boxer type then it's a mistake IMO, Taylor is an educated pressure fighter and all rounder. He can add a few things to his game that would aide his out-boxer skill set but still continue to improve what he is good at by adding additional craft.

I think the mistake in these circumstances is trying to re-fit a fighter to fit the style of that particular Gym, and Davison's rep is defense/mover types, so will he try shoehorn Taylor to become that? If he does, it's a mistake IMO. Davison has already stated he wants to add things to Taylor, rather than change him. The key part is, what can he successfully add?

When Taylor does 'box' he moves and evades well, but he's limited at countering on the move and limited at controlling distance on a consistent basis. His jab lacks the variety to dissuade opponents the way Crawford does or even Prograis does, and unlike most sharpshooter types, or movers he lacks the straight shot with the backhand. Taylor has a better cross and hook with his left than straight down the pipe, and a good defensive jab/straight left hand are important in out-boxing skill set to control tempo and distance

Davison has already addressed Taylor's jab in an interview, stating Taylor's jab numbers are below the division avg for connects and it may be lack of variety, so it has been addressed. But can Davison improve it? I'm not a trainer, so I don't know.

Taylor's defense for a come forward fighter is good, at times very good. He can lose concentration and gets hit with the odd silly shot but defense is not a major failing.

How i remember it...He spent some time at tibbs gym. Now in what capacity, that was never stated.
He could of been there on work experience, as that would be in line with his age. Or he could of been there doing private fitness sessions for clients ( non boxers) who were looking to get fit and he paid tibbs a few quid each time he brought a client.
From there he started hanging around more and started doing bits n bats with tibbs.
Or he could of been there as a second, right from the off. Learning the ropes, with the full intention of training pros under the guidance of tibbs.
All I remember him saying, and it was quite a few years ago now, was that he started working with pros when he was at tibbs gym. He never mentioned how he got to the point of helping tibbs out.
Also as far as I know he is not related to any travelling family's but granted he does have the stereotypical travellers look and the fact that most of his lads in the beginning had there roots with the travelling community, I can understand how people draw that inference.
The 1st time we really saw him,was when BJS fought Akavov.
After the fight, posters were questiong who the hell was that in Bills corner and all the comments been in the manner of "He didnt know what he was talking about or doing"
Now in Bens defence, Bill came out in an interview shortly after and shifted the blame onto himself (BJS).
I'm just really reporting what was said at the time here.
I find Ben a nice guy and wish him well, I don't want this post to sound as tho I'm criticizing him. Sometimes I read past posts of mine and I came across harsher than I initially intended. That's just cos my writing ain't the best, I'm 1st to admit it but sometimes posts get read and I can sound more criticizing than I actually mean. but cornering and training the heavy weight champion of the world was always a job for someone with quite a bit of experience imo but tbf Tyson should of won the 1st wilder fight.

It was a bit harsh to reference that in my original post as obviously he was very close to Fury on a personal level but Freddie Roach has detailed what happened.

When asked if it was true that Ben Davison was in tears, Freddie Roach said:

“He was. He thought for sure that he wasn’t going to get up and he was really worried. The instructors in the corners really had to hold him down and settle him down. He wanted to go into the ring to take care of his fighter, but if you go in that ring it’s an automatic disqualification so we had to hold him down and let it play out. I’m more of an offensive coach, I’m very aggressive and I was a little bit disappointed in the corner work. Ben was telling him to feint and step back, why are you telling him to step back? Let this guy fight, he can get rid of this guy. We haven’t spoke about it yet, but we are going to have a meeting and speak with Ben and so forth because I think he was just very safe. He said: ‘Don’t take chances, wait a minute, don’t take chances? You’re in the boxing ring. You took a chance when you signed the contract for the fight. I was disappointed that he didn’t get a chance to finish him. Ben gave the exact same instructions to the 126lbs fighter that he did the heavyweight fighter. Why are you saying the same things? Why are you treating these people the same? These fighters know each other, but they’re not the same. He did a great job with the conditioning and the weight loss and all that, he’s only a 26-year-old kid"

Taylor himself has said he is a fan of Billy Joe Saunders and that was one of the main reasons for going with Ben.

"After trying out Davison, in Manchester, and Adam Booth, in Surrey, Taylor said he felt he had made the right decision.

“It wasn’t difficult at all,” Taylor said. “Before I spilt with the McGuigans, I was thinking about leaving for a long time. I kept seeing a lot of clips of [Davison) training with Billy Joe and Tyson [Fury]. The way he trained, the style of training, the tactics in the sparring and the padwork. The way Billy Joe boxes too, with his handspeed and footwork, he is southpaw as well, is similar style to me. I thought it would be the perfect combination."

On a side note, I had not seen this classic Saunders effort:

I remember reading Roach's comments after the fight but somehow I missed that part. Thought that security guy was acting like a complete *****. If he tried that with someone like Don Charles, Peter Fury or Mark Tibbs he'd be laid out in an instant.

thanks for the info. It just seems mad that he’s had such fabulous talents in his gym with so little background. Don’t know him and he may indeed be excellent but I’m always cynical (especially in boxing) of people who seem to appear out of nowhere.

are boxers massive bandwagon jumpers too ? These days they all seem to jump trainers every year.
