Benavidez is an overhyped weight bully who looked bad cuz he fought a guy his size

He looked great at 168 against guys he was 2 weight classes bigger than in the ring and could bully physically. But he doesn’t have the power or the skill to deal with the top LHWs because they’re all his own size and he isn’t able to lay on top of them like he has everybody else. An ancient Gvozdyk who wasn’t trying to win and who was pulling his punches again and again still won rounds off of him and made him look amateurish, pushed him back, made him gas, and still pieced him up with patty cake punches. The amount of hype this guy gets is very disproportionate to his actual skill level.

Og wasn't trying to win? Stop. DB handle him pretty good. You may be right about the weight, but DB never struggled in that fight.

I've been saying he's overrated for ages. But having said that, I was more impressed by him against Gvozdyk than in any of his other fights as he wasn't just relying on his size to bully opponents. I'll admit he's a bit better than I originally thought because I thought even faded Gvozdyk would do better than he did, but I'm still not sold on Benavidez. Luckily 168 is pretty weak outside of Canelo, Benavidez and Munguia.

You think he was really going for the KO when he patty cake slapped an exhausted Benavidez’s gloves all night and never put any steam on his punches despite always being a massive puncher and knowing he wouldn’t get a decision? Sure, he was old and his legs are gone mostly but he wasn’t ever really trying to beat or KO Benavidez, he laid down for the most part. Gvozdyk wasn’t trying to win I don’t think.

I was very dissapointed to see he gased out after 7 rounds.

Young, fresh, active guy is being outwork by 37 years old boxer for the last 4 rounds ? Very bad look

I've only seen highlights, but from them his defence looked improved. Only highlights, though.

Defence is the department he's been lacking when I've watched him in earlier fights Plant, Andrade etc could touch him more than they should have seeing that they were mainly concerned with what was coming at them, but maybe he has improved. I need to see the full fight to have a more informed opinion, though.

He has to learn to pace himself and fight more economically.

He was swinging for fences with just about everything he threw. He also started out throwing a lot of punches.

He couldn't keep up that punch output and intensity. Probably nobody could.

Watch a Canelo, Bivol, Crawford, .... they pick their shots and don't load up on everything they throw.

He's young. He'll learn. I thought he looked pretty good but still has some learning to do.

What would motivate someone not to win. He get paid off? Just in it for the pay day? You think the fix was in?

I mean it's a critical post but what about it isn't true? Without the size he wouldn't have been anywhere near as effective. Going up to 175 those advantages just aren't going to be there. I can't see him having anything for Bivol or Beterbiev, and I would not be surprised if lesser fighters caused him serious issues or beat him.

Benavidez was supposed to win and he did win. Lets celebrate every +800 win lmao
