Sampson Lewkowicz, promoter for WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez, says there are ongoing negotiations to have a rematch with Ronald Gavril in January 2018.

There is now some growing steam to see a unification between Benavidez and WBO world champion Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramirez.

Lewkowicz likes the idea of that fight, but he believes the record should be set straight with a Gavril rematch.

"For the moment I do not see the feasibility of the unification of Benavidez and Ramírez, because the rematch is being negotiated with Gavril.. since it was a split decision and some people think that these things should be clarified first," said Lewkowicz to ESPN Deportes.

Is this a good move by Benavidez?
I thought if you win a vacant title you have to defend against two mandatories in a row.

Should be a good fight though.

Right move to take the rematch first since the kid's got more work to do than I thought. Still a heck of a talent.

WBC rankings at 168 are a little fractured though at the moment. #1, 3 and 4 (Smith, Yildirim and Eubank Jr) are all in the WBSS and #2 Dirrell is injured. Gavril (#5) is the highest ranked guy available.

I'm looking forward to it as well, first fight wasn't the blowout I was expecting at all, hoping for some improvement from Benavidez.

    Ok then

Actually this is the type of good work that Benavidez needs in order to improve. Gavril has decent skills and a good chin. Sampson knows what he's doing

Yeah its a good move, he doesn't need this albatross hanging around his neck, he got sloppy and laid on the ropes a little too much like his brother, he needs to work on his stamina and this time around take the fight to Gavril, don't let him off the hook for a second, Mexican style from start to finish, clearly if he takes his foot off the gas, Gavril will exploit it every chance he gets.

It was a cracking fight the first time around, no complaints from me.
