Make no mistake, Benavidez will never be the star that Canelo is. He is Fernando Vargas to Canelo's ODLH. He's not been groomed for that and isn't cut out to be that sort of icon. But we are talking about getting paid 8-10 million every fight instead of 3 million. That's what Benavidez was after, and to be regarded as the best 168lber in the world. That's a life changing difference in pay, as well as in recognition.

The biggest fight of his career didn't happen because the top guy won't fight him. Benavidez is a star in his own right in terms of hardcore notoriety, but he can't increase his earning potential without someone giving him the stage to perform.

For whatever reason, Canelo seems determined to not give Benavidez that stage.

I just don't see how anyone can applaud that...

 

My point is that he shouldn't take 3 years to face his top contender so even now it's been going on too long.

I don't think there's any guarantee Canelo fights him this year as he's refused to fight him the previous two years.

Benavidez is 27 now he needs to move on. He's given Canelo his ultimatum, accept the fight now or lose it.

The biggest fight’s never happen while guy’s aren’t shot when PBC is involved. People are really surprised Benavidez hasn’t fought Canelo? Benavidez can say what he wants, and casuals who don’t understand the sport think it means something when we know these guys have handlers that will move them where it benefits them. It’s obviously better for Benavidez to go around beating hasbeens and smaller fighter’s, while Canelo gets old.

That’s not an ultimatum. An ultimatum requires a consequence. Benavidez willing to hand his ass to Canelo before or after Gvozdyk is not an ultimatum.

 

I think you've nailed it, why Benavidez;s camp took this fight, they saw something wasn't exactly right with Gvodzdyk too. Not a lot but noticeable against top tier fighters. Your comment about his defense not being as tight as before may just be it in a nutshell.

 

The consequence is if Canelo turns the fight down again, Benavidez fights Gvozdyk.

The biggest fight of his career to that point, sold 60k. The hardcore crowd in boxing isn't significant enough to make a star, casual appeal is vital. I get the whole thought of earning your shot, apparently that old system is broken and doesnt guarantee your path anymore. The only thing that bothers me is watching guys wait around for Canelo or any other big star to "make" them rather than make themselves. If a guy won't fight you kick ass until there's no other option and by that time you have likely "made" yourself. But modern boxing is full of guys too worried to take a gamble to further their careers.

 

None of them need each other. They're both multi millionaires.

But the consequence is Canelo is known for ducking his top contender for 3 years and that's something that stays with a fighter forever.

The only way to remove it is if they do fight at some point.

 

There's no consequence for Canelo. Benavidez will ve long forgotten before Canelo.

Their accolades are not in the least bit comparable.

 

Your post is inapplicable because literally everyone else besides Benavidez has gotten a shot with very little effort. Which fighters have "waited" on Canelo?

Benavidez has earned his shot, as well as his reputation. He had every right to expect to be in the ring with Canelo, but instead we get John Ryder, Jermell Charlo, etc.

What is he supposed to do, not demand what is rightfully his?
