Yes I did comment many times. I didn't recognize the thread, but when I saw my comments I sort of remember the responses. Funny how memories remember a few responses out of 17,000.
I've seen some fairly recent pics of Duran over the last year or so and he seems to have dropped a lotta' weight.... He was like 250 pounds when he was at the IBHOF a few years ago........ MR.BILL
Yeah, but Duran seemed to have trained hard to make the 152 that he made for Benitez.... HBO host Barry Tompkins told SRL prior to the opening bell, that Duran looked pretty much the same as he did earlier in '80 against Ray.... But Roberto Duran seemed to gas out by round 7 and became slow and plodding for the remainder of the bout while trying to land a bomb or two on the much more savvy and younger Benitez.... Also, despite only a pound or two in weigh-in differences, Benitez appeared physically bigger than Duran all the way that night in Jan. 1982..... MR.BILLbbb
Duran made the weight easily for Benitez......and his weight was down weeks and weeks before the fight.
He looks really good lately. Actually he has actually been pretty thin for 2 or 3 years now. I would suspect it is for his cardiovascular health. I gained weight myself, and losing weight when we get older is necessary to prevent diabetes and other issues. But it is hard when you get older.
I'm in the same boat............. I need to drop 40 to 50 pounds, but would be stoked to at least shed 35 pounds....... Age is a bad thing........... Weight gain is easy after 40........ :deal MR.BILL:bbb
Benitez was strong at 154. I think it was his best weight. He did some good body work in that fight and I don't think it should be discounted in Duran "gassing".
Duran should have fought at heavyweight and shut the **** up with all the weight-making excuses. It's interesting to imagine if Duran v Holmes could have been any worse for Duran than his fight with Hearns. Duran v Cooney would have been interesting.
Good point. Benitez landed a lot of left hooks to the body, which to me, really seemed to bother Duran.
I think it would be worse because of the size of Holmes. Holmes against any of the fab four would not be great. Just too big a right hand.
Carlos Eleta threw Duran into a prison for a few weeks as a training camp to make sure Duran trained properly and shifted the weight. He had nothing to do other than train and probably over train which would explain him looking so lethargic against Benitez. Not that it would have matter anyway as Duran was incapable of beating fighters like Benitez above 147. Here's an article pre-fight. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1964&dat=19820130&id=IgAtAAAAIBAJ&sjid=pM0FAAAAIBAJ&pg=1165,6416078
even when he trains there is an excuse. Marvin Hagler used to say he went to jail. No booze no woman and he came out in shape. No matter what Duran gets an excuse and Benitez no credit. And when Hearns beat Duran, Duran another excuse. And Leonard 2 another excuse. Does anyone see a pattern here? He fought the best guys he ever fought and loses easily and an excuse. When he fights Minchillo or Moore he was in shape.
