Still, **** all the bull****......... Benitez' win over Duran in Jan. 82. would be the last true flash of greatness by Wilfred ever displayed in the ring.....

Benitez had great defense against Hearns in Dec. 82, but his offense sucked ass that night.....

Hamsho chewed Benitez up in 1983...

Davey Moore waxed Benitez later in Europe, and Matt Hilton KTFO of Benitez in circa '87.....

Pat Lawlor pretty much ended Benitez' career in the late 80's or so..... I lost track of Wilfred's career by then........

I have a club fight on tape from the USA network in '86 with Benitez winning a ho-hum decision over ordinary Paul Whittaker....... YAWN!

The problem with Benitez with Hearns was any offense he would have Hearns would have countered.
I never understood the Hamsho fight. I don't think Wilfred knew or understood Hamsho and was just surprised. I don't think anyone who took Hamsho for granted did well fighting him. I do believe had Benitez fought Hagler, he would have done better than he did for Hamsho. although middleweight was just too high for Benitez.

Benitez was shot by age 25. His lack of discipline and his lifestyle caught up with him. He had no legs from `85 on.

If middleweight was to high for Benitez! It was to high for Duran and look what happened there when Roberto faced Marvin.

If Benitez had fought Hagler instead of Hamsho he would have won, I'am saying this based on what Roberto did to him & Marvin's psychi when in the spotlight against a name fighter. We know back then that Marvin's style was not the destruct & destroy of the Hearns fight. I'm a big fan of Hagler but Benitez had all the tools as we know to make the very best look ordinary & tentative. You've got to winkle Wilfred out of his shell as Tommy did, Marvin as we know has the boxing nous to do this, but would he apply it as Tommy did? I dunno. But Benitez/Hagler was the next big superfight touted until Wilfred mugged himself off against Hamsho.

Tbh,I believe Duràn didn't really get in a truly sharp condition for Benitez,BUT...I still thought that any version of light middleweight Duràn would get smashed by Benitez still, light middleweight him was a different breed,if it wasn't for Detroit superhuman experiment subject Hitman Hearns though...
