All debuted in the 1970s and clearly below the Leonard-Hagler-Hearns-Holmes-Spinks-Sanchez tier. But how would you rank them? For reference other great fighters that debuted in the 1970s are Azumah Nelson, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Eusebio Pedroza. Here's mine: 1. Wilfredo Gomez 2. Carlos Zarate 3. Wilfred Benitez 4. Aaron Pryor
I’ve only watched Zarate and Benitez properly. I don’t really know much about Gomez but I do know Pryor should probably be bottom of the totem pole IMO.
That's it old mate. A small gap from Gomez to Zarate and for me a miniscule one from Zarate to Benitez before it opens wider to Pryor. My only drama was which way to have Benitez and Zarate.
#1 Gomez : possibly the greatest bantam/super bantam in history, all of his losses came at feather and above. #2 Wilfredo Benitez won a championship in three weight classes. Turned pro at 15 yrs old, won 1st championship at 17. a child phenom one of the greatest defensive fighters in history. #3 Aaron Pryor. Often over looked and underrated because of "magic bottle " theories, but a dynamic force at jr.welter. in his prime Beat everyone put in front of him convincingly #4 Carlos Zarate In my opinion last, but certainly not the least , a devastating puncher. in a couple of the greatest action fights in history. at original weight, Thomas Hearns with a left hook.
