Benitez vs Floyd at 147???

Floyd has not fought a welterweight even slightly approximating the talent level of the guys you just mentioned. Until he fights one, let's leave pitting him against these greats out of sane discussions.

He has fought two legitimate welterweights, Zab Judah and Carlos Baldomir and you jump to Leonard, Hearns and Duran? Whoa slow down there junior.

 

He dodged the bombs of a prime Tommy Hearns at superwelterweight for 12 rounds and rarely got caught. That was surreal as Hearns in his prime was so quick and accurate.

 

If Benitez is around today for sure he aint gonna resort to cherrypicking his opponents. He had immense talent and would have beaten all WWs today, even Floyd. He will also school Paul Williams

 

Yeah you're right...Benitez proved his against a far greater calibre of opposition.

Floyd's fanboys dont think their hero is a WW at all. Him not making the catchweight of 144lbs is a very big mystery to them. Makes it easier to accept their hero not fighting WW's. Benitez by default.

 

ur basing this off of 1 fight..look at floyds career...im sorry man but as fighters i prolly rank benitez above floyd but as for defense floyds defense is on another level man..the guy juss dont get hit much

 

Both excellent fighters with some similarities and many differences. Benitez was a pure boxer with ace counter-punching abilities. Off the ropes he was lethal, baiting opponents in for the right hand. He would set his opponents up with hard feints to set up the left hand to body and left hook up top (now who does this also remind you of??) Floyd uses these exact tactics, only through different methods. Benitez however was far more effective, because his footwork always set up everything, Floyd however is often times forced into such compromising positions. They both are economical in the sense that they both made every punch they threw count, but Benitez would commit to his much more often (which sometimes got him into trouble).

Benitez was also tremendous at gauging distance (evident in his bouts with Duran and Hearns) he would often dodge punches by hardly moving his upper body at all. Benitez wasn't so good at taking the lead in being the aggressor. In fact in the times where he got out of his element of boxing and wanting to press the action he was stopped or nearly stopped (Curry and Leonard). Floyd IMHO is much better off the front foot. He has a lot of variety: leaping left hook, straight hand, hook-uppercut hybrid punch. He gets all of these punches off so quickly, at the right moments and their deadly accurate. IMO he also holds the advantage in the speed department which presents another barrier for Benitez to cross.

The question when judging a winner would first be who would take the lead? If it's Benitez, I believe it puts him at a disadvantage as he is going against a guy who comes CLOSE in counter punching ability and has keen sense of distance and rhythm with ATG defense. How would Floyd solve the puzzle of not being able to find his opponent even when he's in range and given a dose of his own medicine. I believe Benitez would establish rhythm earlier than Floyd however as his footwork, movement, and ability to slip punches would throw Floyd for a loop.

It comes down to who is more comfortable fighting against a mirror basically.
