Benitez vs Floyd at 147???

Benitez is vastly underrated.... probably many people don't even know who he was.... His nick was El Radar and that means something.

I like Benitez in this match by a close UD.

btw, being in a better position as atg doesn't guarantee that a aboxer will beat another who is in a lower position.... head to head maches has to do more with styles and what each boxer brings to the ring.....

Floyd is an ATG over all, but he is NOT and great welterweight. Benitiez takes a clear UD over 12, and a WIDE UD over 15.

Floyd can't crack like Leonard or Hearns...especially not like Hearns. And both of them had alot of trouble keeping Hagler off of them. Tommy chose to stand and fight, hurt his hand and got Koed valiantly. Leonard wisely chose to stay on the move and steal rounds flurrying but was put through the wringer most of the round before he flurried(especially latefr in the fight) A prime Hagler puts Floyd through hell.

As for Benitez, he'd match up extremely well against Floyd. Being both defensive geniuses AND counterpunchers would make the rounds very hard to score. Benitez's superior firepower would swing close rounds in his favor. No way does Floyd have an easy time with him and he could very well lose. There's no shame if Floyd fought the Furious Five(Leonard, Hearns, Duran, Benitez, and Hagler) and emerged with a loss or two.

 

Benitez hands down especially since you can't mention a welterweigt that Gayweather has beaten !!!!

Gone 15 close rounds with Leonard on 9 days of training.
Beat Palomino convincinly.
Split decision with " HitMan " Hearns.
Beat Duran convincingly
And on and on....

Not washed up fighters such as Gatti, De La Hoya...overrated Hattons and underweight Marquez's.

Hmm, it's unclear why so many people are seemingly upset at the prospect that Mayweather could defeat Benitez.

 

This is a fight where Mayweather's propensity to pick his shots, throw one shot at a time, always maintain distance may serve to help him. SRL showed ring intelligence beyond his years to do the same when he fought Benitez, as he was a supreme counterpuncher to go along with his defensive brilliance (much like Sal Sanchez) so a combination puncher would be countered repeatedly. SRL kept Bentiez at the end of his punches, and caught leather any time he chose to doggedly pursue El Radar.

With that being said, Benitez' poise would win him the contest, as Floyd would be in an almost unthinkable position- fighting someone who has even better defense than himself. And someone who is also fast (but not as fast as Mayweather), good power, and boxing intelligence off the charts. Floyd's best bets would be to catch Benitez at a time when he trained sparingly (which was pretty often for a fighter of such caliber).

Benitez was so brilliant his entire life that boxing was simple, so simple that he saw little need for pesky inconveniences, like training.

 

Good post. I agree that Floyd's defensive mindset would bode well for him in this fight. I don't see Benitez outthinking him in the fight, and Floyd will be content to fight the way the match likely would wind up going.

 

You beat me to it, incredibly gifted, but when yer think of it all he was still just a kid who wanted to do what we all wanted to do at 17/18/19/20 & some, party party & enjoy life like any teenager & this was a teenager that won a world title at 17, mind-bending & won his 3rd title at 22.

You can see why he never bothered training as it proberbly was a way to **** his old man off. I think he turned pro at 15? but i really do believe if he trained & took it a bit more serious i doubt he would have been beaten, but it all came when he was to young & as the old saying goes "yer can't put an old head on young shoulders"

I remember Leonard saying that Benitez gave him fits & made him look stupid/clumsy at times, it was as if yer had to get Benitez's interest, i always remember the Hope fight where Hope would appear to be dominating the action against a really bored as usual lazy Benitez, just watch the way Benitez would walk back to his corner, it was if he was going on a sunday stroll, that was until the cut & then Benitez just woke up & jumped up 10 gears, crash bang wallop, game over, as yer said, if he wanted too!!!! He could do anything in that ring.

Can anyone name a modern comparison or anything else that comes near to Benitez in what he acheived & fought & being no more than a kid, we'll never see his like again.

 

so true. I saw that fight. Benitez is really gifted. deceptive hand speed, ko power, great defense and his ability to study opponents is undeniable.

I'd prefer a foucsed Benitez over Floyd any day.

 

If Benitez discipline was half of what his natural talent was there is no doubt in my mind that he would have been considered among the absolute best if not the best fighter to ever lace them up. the mans skillset was out of this world. with all that he accomplished at a very young age, i dont think we ever saw a 100% prepared and focused benitez.

i am in the camp that believes that he lays a beating on floyd. as good as floyd is defensively benitez was better, i dont believe that floyd has the power to gain his respect. but once floyd tastes the first counter it will make him wary about jumping in.

at 147 benitez is simply too much for floyd.

 

Great post, especially from an apparent Duran fan (if Im wrong, please correct me). Even with Mayweather, with all his apparent gifts, skill, genetics, and otherworldly skills still trains as hard as anyone in the sport, yet still could not make weight last fight. Benitez was in some ways the opposite, so ridiculously skilled that he didnt see the need to push himself and we can make comparisons with our own personal lives.

If we were at a job for 5 years, and so easily better than everyone else....what incentive is there to try harder? There really isnt. He was a once in a generation talent, and I can only think of one other fighter who beat 3 all time greats before 23 (well, Palomino being borderline, or just very good, and the other fighter being Sal Sanchez who is the Mexican equivalent of Benitez in my opinion).

With that being said, I think Benitez wins, but Mayweather should be given credit for working so hard at his craft and respecting the sport enough to maximize his talent...many wish Benitez did the same.
