Pitting the prime 1981 Benitez, 155, vs 1980 Alan Minter instead of that hideous beast, Hagler.

I actually wouldnt know which way this goes but if I had to place a bet, I would take Minter to retain his middleweight title.

In this instance, Id say Benitez. Just a higher level at that point.

Just a suggestion, Mark. I'd probably just do one thread - Benitez v these guys rather than multiple individual threads. Keeps all the discussion in one place and doesn't push recent threads off the front page. No criticism intended. Cheers.

I'm going on Bennie. I see him stopping Minter, on the old bugbear, cuts. I'll go with the middle rounds.

I bet Alan tires himself out trying to hit Wil, and then once Alan is on the verge of exhaustion, Wilfred's killer instinct take over and takes him out

I can totally see this as a realistic scenario and probably the only one

Though Benitez handled southpaws,Santos and Hope well they weren't full fledged middles.Minter could box ,not as well as Benitez ,but pretty well and he had decent power.I pick Minter.Wifredo didn't do much at160lbs.

Yep, as good as Minter was, I see Benitez being the better fighter.

Not at 160lbs,imo. I doubt Benitez beats Finnegan at160lbs.
    Who did Benitez stop at160lbs?

My reasoning as well. Not sure I would definitely favor Minter but I think he has a better chance under these circumstances

I agree. Benitez would NOT whip Kevin in any lifetime

You may be right Tonto. I think I may be guilty of overestimating Bennie a little.
Minter s got that solid record at Middle.
Maybe not a complete white wash for Minter, Benitez skilful, but I'll concur that Alan s more proven higher up.

I would imagine Benitez would have his way, as Minter would start bleeding from the start.

Minter was nothing if not brave, so it could get to the point that post fight, the canvas could be sold as a drip work to compare with Pollock!

As an obvious fan of Benitez I hope you respect his farther Donald Curry just as much.

Benitez was actually having trouble with Hope until unusually for him he took Hope out with a one punch ko.
Minter was bigger and had more power than Hope and was equally as skilled.
This is a tough one to call Benitez had so many nuances to his game apart from against the real elite it’s difficult to back against him.
I’d take him to win a very close decision but he’d be pushed all the way.

I see Wilfred Benitez prevailing by decision, but Benitez had an uncanny habit of going down when tagged.

but what if he DOESNT bleed?

you cant just assume he is going to cut, otherwise, he would have lost most of his fights
