Fidel "OG" Hernández is a 40 year old Phoenix native with a 19-4 (10) record that stretches all the way back to 1996, with a gap in activity from 2001 until last October. My guess is he caught a case and did some hard time - but a huge vocal gathering has turned out for him tonight. Yong upset a few unbeaten prospects here & there early in his career (from 2008 until 2012) but is on an 0-10-1 skid in the last six years.
Round 1 Hernández is swirling his upper body in the air like a cocktail stirrer, a bit of Drunken Master tomfoolery, before lurching in to catch Yong in the face with a lumpy but stiff jab. Arm punch combos from Hernández, mostly caught on the outer biceps, elbows and forearms of Yong who is wrapping his arms over his face while stepping laterally and snaking out some light counter jabs, occasionally followed by slashing rights as he turns Hernández. Cross-armed defense from Hernández, screening out most of Yong's shots. Little clean stuff landed either way. Hernández more aggressive. 10-9 Hernández
Mike - "Dave!.....Dave!" Dave - "Yeah" Mike - "Where's the Camera?" Dave - "Not got one" Mike - "You said you can film stuff! You said you filmed your sisters wedding!" Dave - "I did.....I used my phone" Mike - "FFS Dave......Boss, you know when I said I had a mate who films stuff......"
Round 2 Hernández is getting lit up now as Yong starts to flip jabs up from the hip and lash down upon Hernández's brow with rights from outside at diagonal angles. Hernández seemingly gassed already, just a few minutes into the contest, laboring to keep his arms up, let alone fire them. Very slow when he is punching, all his movements betrayed with ample notice for Yong to reposition himself before jabbing in from the flanks and then grabbing to do a bit of wrestling, further sapping the older man's stamina. Ugly but effective stuff from the man that was brought in to lose this one. 10-9 Yong 19-19
Round 3 Hernández is digging hard with L&R hooks on either side of the body now having found a second wind, bodying up against Yong in the center of the ring. Yong is just grinding into him, peppering his way free with light double & triple jabs and swaying out of reach of Hernández's headhunting lead rights. Hernández lunging and missing up top but getting himself in close to score those meaty hooks downstairs, which cause Yong to slow his roll and stand pat for a moment. Yong has switched to southpaw and is trying to sharpshoot while moseying in a slow, swaggering strut at mid-range around Hernández, acting slick as he jerks himself away from Hernández's shots, but not really scoring his own right jabs either. 10-9 Hernández 29-28 Hernández
Round 4 Hernández is completely winded but still chasing after Yong relentlessly, looping in underhanded body shots wherever he sees exposed target as Yong keeps raising & lowering his arms half-heartedly while skipping away in an endless circle. Yong very negative, just letting Hernández pummel his sides & back while twisting away from him on the ropes before fleeing again with bursts of foot speed. Lots of clinching whenever Hernández is close but not working the body. 10-9 Hernández 39-37 Hernández
Yeah, this co-main is probably only halfway over. I'm not expecting a knockout here as the fave is too gassed and the underdog too featherfisted to score one. So main event won't even start until 12:30 EST.
