““Joe struggled against nobodies. But when he stepped up in class to fight the likes of Jeff Lacy, for instance, he made them look like nobodies. I’d have loved him to have been around in my heyday. I’ll be honest enough to admit I think he would have beaten me — he’d have been in a fight though. Old timers will tell you he would never have lived with Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler or Tommy ‘Hitman’ Hearns. I disagree — Joe would have beaten them all. How many fighters would love to finish with a record like Joe’s? Outside of Wales I don’t think he got the recognition he deserved. Forty six fights unbeaten is a heck of an achievement. I don’t think we will ever see his like again."

That pretty much makes Joe the greatest fighter who ever breathed.

Lets look at it a bit fairer though..As Nigel is mostly talking about smaller fighters.

Does Joe beat a prime Roy, Bob Foster, Ezzard Charles, Michael Spinks, Carlos Monzon, Harold Johnson, Eddie Mustafa Muhummed?

    More than likely not.

Great fighter, one the best of his time but I think we will see guys make it to those kind of numbers in the future simply because fighters are so **** scared of taking a risk and getting an L on their record these days.
Not having a go at Joe but the game seems to be heading that way if it isnt already there.

Calzaghe easily beats Leonard and Hearns. Hagler and Benn would have been a lot tougher

Every fighter is entitled to an opinion, and Been is certainly respectable. Whether you agree with him or not, I think its fair enough to say that Calzaghe should be recognized as an ATG.

Right. and as Lennox says " styles make fights " so this is something we'll never know...I say he'd give anyone problems...it's too bad thgought, that his resume is not better, he could likely have beaten some bigger names

Calzaghe would probably beat most or all of them, based on size advantage. Leonard's prime was at 147 lbs. Calzaghe's was at 168 lbs, and also under different weigh-in rules, so he'd likely have been an 175 lb fighter under the old weigh-in rules. That also gives him a considerable size advantage over Hagler, who wasn't an especially big MW either. The Hearns of 1987 at light-heavyweight might beat Calzaghe, but it's pretty unlikely the early 90s Hearns does.

Calzaghe is certainly not better/greater than Leonard/Hearns/Hagler, he's just bigger.
