Benn Eubank 2 the biggest British fight ever?

Fury v Whyte was the biggest in the UK although Froch v Groves was the only evenly matched fight out of the three.

 

90s Benn v Eubank fights which were bigger and more evenly matched.

Bruno v Lewis was another

There's no hype for this fight at all, doesn't help that we didn't need the first fight, and it was a clear JNR victory in the first fight.

If we were back in the Matchroom/SKY PPV days it would have been plastered all over.

Turki alienating a lot of people hasn't helped either.

 

No chance. Loads don't even know it's happening.

 

Both Froch Groves fights had a serious buzz. The stakes were so much higher than anything CEJ or Egg have ever done.

 

This is simply a non title Copper Box main event if both fighters were not born with silver spoon opening all the doors.

The venue is far from being sold out as well.

 

lool There's almost zero hype behind this rematch, there was far more interest in their first clash.

Yeah, exactly, there’s barely a flicker of hype this time. The first one had curiosity, controversy, and that family-feud energy. This one just feels manufactured.

Go look at those numbers, it just shows what a niche sport boxing’s become since the heyday of McGuigan and the Eubank and Benn Snr era. Those figures now would command Canelo-type purses, and that’s the only reason Jnr and Conor are earning what they are. Maybe Shane missed a trick becoming a trainer – he could’ve completed the Nepo trilogy of top UK double-digit millions on free TV.

 

From my time watching boxing, I believe the following were much bigger.

AJ vs Klitschko
Froch vs Groves 2

Eubank vs Benn 1 felt a lot bigger, and had more eyes on it.

Fury vs Whyte is debatable.
I might add Haye vs Chisora to that with that build up.

Don’t think I’m missing anything else of recent times.

 

Benn–Eubank 2 seemed bigger to me. If I remember correctly, it was also close, maybe a week or two after Lewis–Bruno. I still remember the big ITV special before the fight with Jonathan Ross – Toney was on it, along with Mickey Rourke.

Obviously the first fight was better, and I expect similar at the weekend, either a blowout or a tactical fight that could go either way.

 

It would be big if it was on a proper channel. Not the app. Out of sight out of mind.

 

If we're talking all-British fights, it doesn't even crack the top 10. Obviously, if including any fights in Britain, it drops even further down.

Feels like there should be a Cooper fight in there somewhere, but struggling to place one. Bugner was an up and comer at the time, and it's hard to find a standout fight from his dominant domestic run. They were all "big", but his most significant fights were against overseas opposition.

Probably missing some big fights somewhere of course. AJ-Wlad and Ali-Cooper II would obviously be in there if criteria shifted to any fights in Britain.

 

Calzaghe v Lacey was huge as well although the viewing figures were hit with the late starting time to suit US viewers.

Hatton v Money and Pac were simply on a different level along with Fury v Wilder Trilogy.

The OP will need strong arms when the time comes to reel in his rod.

 

Lewis v Bruno was a lot bigger, the general public were all talking about that fight in the build up.

 

This rematch ain't anywhere on the radar of the biggest British fights
