No he didn't.Collins retired rather than face Calzaghe,or anyone else,on the advice of his physician due to a debilitating physical condition.

what i meant is that if benn was shot at the time they fought then so was collins. this is called a 'condition' . they were the same age , collins was past 2 hard fights with eubanks and a loss to reggie johnson (a heavily hard hitter at 160) . also after his 2 losses to kalambay and mccallum.
collins retired 2 fights after the benn fights , was down in the last , and we all were reminded the collapse story in his preparations for the calzaghe fights , if it is not shot then what is ?

    Benn
    Eubank
    Calzaghe

    Collins

My list above and to enter the debate over Collins wins over Eubank & Benn they where both past there best no dout about it and to say that's an excuse is stupid ,exsample do you honestly think Prime Tyson losses to Williams,Mcbride does a Prime De La Hoya lose to Pac at 147 ( NO WAY ) Prime Ali never losses to Holmes , Berbick or Spinks 1 for that matter so age does make a big ****ing difference

Collins wins over Eubanks dont compare to any of those examples Carling.

Chris was the incumbent champ, unbeaten and still a capable fighter. He wasnt completely shot like those other fighters.

Benn Offered To Fight 168 IBF champion Roy Jones in Roy's home town in a unification fight for Benn's WBC belt and even offered to give Jones the entire fight purse but Jones turned the fight down. Not being able to fight Jones was one of Benn's regrets as he explains in his autobiography Dark Destroyer.

Can Calzaghe claim to go after fight's like this when an all time great is in his prime

I never sayed they where shot just that they where far from in there prime and the time of the 4 fight's so where a fighter is in his carear does matter and play's some part in a possible outcome even more so when in with more then a contender

Most of those examples were shot though...And Eubanks wasnt.

Not peak and fading...yes..But you cant bundle in Steve's wins with those other ones..Obviously you are trying to take something away from them which is fine to a point if people are going to act as though Eubanks was prime there...but you cant go the other way and act as though he was totally past it either.

As much as I liked Benn better than Eubank, no way he was better, Eubank stopped him once & the 2nd fight was a draw, Eubank also beat Watson who stopped Benn (even tho we all know Watson really won the first & had the second in the bag before tragedy struck, Chris still showed more toughness than Nigel because he never got stopped by Watson like Benn did), Collins stopped Benn too but couldnt stop Eubank.

    My list is.....
    1. Calzaghe (undisputable)
    2. Eubank
    3. Collins
    4. Benn

Ps. Eubank & Collins could be swapped around on a different day.

If Benn did win the 2nd fight, it was by no means clear cut, it was very close, no robbery either way... that still doesnt equal the 9th rd stoppage victory Eubank held over him closer to their primes.

Ps. Eubank was past his best vs guys like Calzaghe & Thomson but still showed more toughness than Benn did in his losses.
Eubank was the better fighter, as much as I hated it at the time & never admitted because I liked Benn & despised Eubank, I can admit now that both guys have retired & I have respect for both, anyone that says Benn was better than Eubank is lying to themselves IMHO.

Huh?? Benn was a far better boxer around 93-94 than when he fought Eubank the 1st time.

I'm a Brit and a HUGE Eubank fan but I will try to be as unbiased as possible.
    1. Steve Collins - Not because he was technically better than anyone else on the list but simply because he beat both Benn and Eubank twice each. Eubank + Benn may have been past their prime but so were some of the guys that they beat to build their reputations.

    2. Chris Eubank - Simply the Best. I really wanted to put him at top spot but unfortunately doesn't quite cut it because of the first fight with Collins. Eubank had a great chance to finish Collins but failed to show his killer instinct. I understand he did this subconsciously because of what happened to Watson but it makes him flawed as a fighter nonetheless.

    3. Joe Calzaghe - Apparently Benn, Collins and Eubank all stated that Calzaghe would have beaten them all if he had featured in their era. Eubank is the only one who could have really commented on Calzaghe's ability as a fighter as he is the only one to have faced him. But I believe that Eubank is being a little hard on himself there given the fact that he filled in for Collins at very short notice to fight the Welshman. I rate him below Third because Eubanks victory over Benn is more credible than Calzaghes victory over Eubank.

    4. Nigel Benn - Fearless and Aggressive, always great to watch especially his grafted performance against Gerald McClellan. However Benn always came across to me as a little one dimensional in the way that he was a puncher and not a boxer. I think that this flaw was well exposed by both Michael Watson and Chris Eubank who were more the full package. Benn is also the only guy to feature on the list to have not defeated one of the others.

does anybody agree or even half agree???
