I forgot the details but the King family (Don and his stepson) didn't like McClellan because of a affair he had with some girl. I forget the connection she had to the Kings but they were dead against it and warned him that they were going to "fix him" someday. On top of that McClellan wanted the get paid and was hassling King about his share of the purses, he was also planning on leaving King at some point. The Benn fight was really seen as a warm up for the winner of Toney-Jones, with the winner walking away with both belts. Jones and Benn won, what exactly happened after that lord knows
That's not exactly true, there is the Jones Q and A before the Brannon fight were he says that he had made offers to the other champions in his division and they had turned him down. Im not sure if they say specific names, but that Q and Q was at the end of 96, neither Benn or Eubank were champions at that point
Dude, you're just Trolling now, McClellans brain was bleeding from round 2, he said he wanted to quit then but allowed his team to talk him into continuing
The vid you are talking about has been taken down off of youtube, I have tried looking for it as well. Ive heard different stories on the Liles offer, but I read it was due to his contract with King and Kings stand off with HBO. I dont think he offered Benn a deal, as Kevin Mitchell reports in his book War Baby that Benn was desperate to fight Roy and hoping he would get 3M for it. Benn also would of been retired by the time Roy did his Q and A
did you see ricky hatton leave frank warren and beat 3 fighters in the US to get a floyd and pacman fight? good! then stop crying as a brit who can't admit that his other countrymen never made the same moves. nothing pisses me off more than ignorance - and a lot of it in boxing comes from nationalism over understanding.
Collins at that point in his career had beaten Eubank*2 and Benn*2, so I can say that he was in a better position that Marg.
Frank Warren was Benn promoter with King having some kind of vested interest. His contracts with Benn were three fight deals which, Benn renewed with him twice. I think the last time he was involved in a Benn fight was the Malinga fight.
You guys weren't watching boxing then. I was fighting around that time, and Benn-Jones could've been made. Benn lost it after what happened to Gerald, and most of you only remember Jones losing to Tarver and Johnson. You can't fool me lol... Youtube is great, but it is a fascade to what you guys think you know...
From watching the first minute of that video the thing that struck me was what a dumbass the commentator is. Suggesting that maybe the official result would be a DQ loss for McLellan because he knelt down and took the count.atsch I know he thought maybe he quit due to an injury, but even if he did it would class as a TKO, does that idiot know even know the rules of the sport? EDIT: Listened to a bit more and he is meaning a DQ loss for Benn due to a clash of heads. Even dumber, he goes on "we don't know who the champion is yet". Yes we did, jesus what a cretin.
Jones's camp offered Benn $10,000,000, but he was under contract to King and would've had to pay that back in court. Plus Benn already had that sort of money just floating around his bank accounts. King was offering Benn and Jones $25,000,000 each. Jones rejected. Another point is that Benn lived in Los Angeles at the time and trained in Tenerife. So to fight in Jones's 'backyard' would have to of meant Pensacola FL. In England his fights were immense with the crowd reactions, compare DeWitt fight to Eubank fight a few months later - much greater occasion (Eubank fight). And Atlantic City was DeWitt's hometown.
