I recently rewatched this classic 1995 bout. This was a fight i can remember watching ages ago. Was a late Saturday night, watching on ITV, was only like 8 but loved watching boxing. Can always remember Benn being knocked out the ring, for some reason it seems so much more brutal seeing him in my head getting smashed through the ropes. What are peoples thoughts and memories on the fight and two great fighters in benn and mcclellan?? What caused such a dramatic ending?? Was it all Benns rabbit punches or was mcclellan hurt before the fight??
There are rumours of McClellan going through the blinking thing in sparring a few months earlier. He probably already had some form of brain damage before the fight.
Mwaaahhhh!!! benn was pushed back in to the ring, got too much time when he was knocked out of the ring, the ref dragged him back in, etc. prepare for all the usual myths to be dragged out. truth is the g-man was not right before stepping into the ring, he already had problems, did king pay the doctors off? who knows. one thing is for sure, the last thing that should ever have happened was putting the g-man in his condition in the ring with a sadistic animal like benn.
I remember watching this live and was also about 8 or 9 I think. I clearly remember being left in the house alone and going absolutely mental all the way through it. One of the most brutal and action packed fights I've ever seen. The fight should've been stopped in the first really, was it Dave Parris referreeing? Whoever it was gave Benn the benefit of the doubt when most would've called a halt to proceedings. Being knocked down and through the ropes so brutally in the first round usually results in a stoppage. McLelland punched himself out early and was absolutely exhausted by the middle rounds when Benn started coming on strong. Had it not ended so tragically it would be remembered as one of the best British boxing events of recent times. A bit like Eubank's win over Watson.
the fact that benn in the second beat the absolute **** out of mcclellan landing some absolutely sickening bombs proves that stopping the fight in the first would have been utter bull****. you get 20 seconds to recover and get back in the ring once you've been knocked out of it, benn did just that.
I watched it live as well (haven't actually watched it since...) and I was about 17 or 18. It was a Rocky film come to life. One of the most exciting fights I'd ever seen, only for what happened afterwards to ensure I'd never want to see it again.
McLellans corner should have thrown the towell in when he had breathing problems. My other memory is don king looking on in disgust at McLellan for taking the knee the second time. He was obviously in trouble. Great win by Benn though, complete warrior and will always be my fave boxer
there have always been rumours that gerald wanted out several rounds before he was stopped but his corner didn't let him.
Absolutely. Taking nothing away from Benn he was awsome that night. He took a serious beating in that opening round though and many refs might have been inclined to stop the action due to the punishment Benn was taking without reply.
I have a very similar memory. I remember being really shocked and slightly upset when I heard he was so badly hurt. Probably the first time I seen someone get permanantley injured live in front of me.
For some reason i can always remember a news report the next day about it, Benn also had complications during the brain scan apparently and they announced Gerrald was in a coma. What are your thoughts on Gerald?? I mean some people i have spoke to reckon it was good that he ended up the way he had because of his animal fights, now i'm a boxing lover not particularly a pet lover (as i do not own any) but what are your thoughts on this??
Well, of all the god damn people who shoots down birds, deers, rabbits for a hobby, i'd say it's harsh for gman to suffer that fate simply because he's involved in, let's just say "cruel to animal" activity. He's now half-blind, half-deaf, and living a nondescript existence. Then again, it's a risk they are willing to take everytime they step on that ring.
The stories I heard about Gerald makes me think, that if one person in boxing deserves to end up like blind with braindamage, it's him. Apparently, he bought labradors and other dogs and taped up their mouths before making them fight his pittbull, as sparring - timing how long time it took to kill the other dog. When his dog lost a fight, he shot it in the head. I watched the fight recently, but because of the aftermath, I found it impossible to enjoy the fight itself.
i have three labradors myself and wouldnt like to think about what i would do to someone if they did that to my dogs..... but I still cant bring myself to say im glad or he deserved to end up the way he did, I would rather die than live like that
