I honestly don't think so. I think McClennan was a superior middleweight to Pavlik, and G-Man only moved up 1 weight division, Pavlik would have to move up two. Then again, if Pavlik beats Hopkins more convincingly than Calzaghe did(n't), then maybe it would be the better win, especially as it might be in America.
All it says to me is that the P4P ratings are very slow to recognise the cream of European fighters. I'd have Kessler start favourite vs Hopkins, Pavlik and Taylor who are all ranked very highly P4P.
Kessler is a 168 champion, Taylor and Pavlik were at 160 at the time, so the fact that he might have been favourite in a fight with them has to do with weight as well as quality. I would fancy Kessler to beat Taylor, but not Pavlik and certainly not Hopkins. Look how much closer it was between Hopkins and Calzaghe than it was between Kessler and Calzaghe? I do find Calzaghe fans's belief in the ability of Kessler to be most intriguing. Here we have a man who Joe Calzaghe himself described in his 2007 autobiography as 'unproven', yet his own fans speak of him as some sort of demigod. Jermain Taylor beat a better version of Hopkins than Calzaghe beat TWICE. Hopkins was p4p#1 at the time. Kelly Pavlik stopped the much-vaunted Edison Miranda, then beat Hopkins's conqueror Taylor twice, the 1st time in stunning fashion. Hopkins? Legend. I think these might be the reasons they were ranked pound-for-pound, and not nationality. Kessler? Beat most of the top guys in a weak weight division, none of whom were pound-for-pound ranked. There you go. No anti-European conspiracy, just boxing logic.
