In his post-fight interview after the Sanderline match [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7W4kLzhBnPw[/ame] Sanderline really was a crafty, clever and concrete chap who gave all the top guys issues. Probably less so Nigel than Barkley, Toney and McClellan. How do we think Benn could've done with the other middleweights at that time though? Michael Nunn, Steve Collins and McCallum come to mind. I don't think he'd have done too good with McCallum (although he had a faster punch in the right hand than any of Kalambay, Collins or Watson, who landed it), because it's McCallum. But what about Nunn or Collins against Benn around that time? Or even Herol Graham or Julian Jackson? Benn-Nunn, IBF title? Benn-Collins? Benn-Graham? Benn-McCallum, WBA title? Benn-Jackson, vacant WBC title?
I'd make him favourite over Collins and a slight one against Jackson. Can't see him haveing much luck against the others however.
I think he'd find Nunn and Graham. I don't think he'd beat Collins. Six rounds with Benn at his best is six rounds too long if you're guys who pull back away from punches, no matter how good at it you are. However, if you have a granite jaw, you could get by Benn.
started a thread on classic about a year ago regarding BENN-NUNN and it was a shame it never happened, remember reading an article in RING in 89/90 and they were comparing it to a M/W version of ALI-FRASIER.....BENN 4 me BENN had obviously left it all in the ring with MCLELLAN by the time he met COLLINS..........evens in his prime if you see BOMBER go you would have to fancy him to bamboozle BENN but would NIGEL bring out a bomb like JULIAN JACKSON..........yes McMCALLUM was quality and would give BENN trouble similar to EUBANK........... BENN-JACKSON= This content is protected
McCallum would give him different trouble to that of Eubank. It was Eubank's ring movement that gave Benn trouble, McCallum didn't move around much but was a super technician with a jab he could double and treble as easy as every day tasks (such as breathing, for instance), a right hand he timed every single time and tight accurate inside counter shots to the body and head. He had great punch variety with mid-ring movement and was naturally gifted - nothing robotic about this man. Eubank's roboticness gave Benn trouble as well as his ring generalship, chin, sneaky rights and flurries. But McCallum was a different animal.
A prime nunn on his night would have played around with benn nunn is 1 of the most underrated middleweights in the history of the sport
He would've done. But Benn at his best was the most lethal puncher and not just at close and mid ranges, he had those superb natural punching leverages and could really launch the right hand untelegraphedly fast and a distance forward. Nunn had the wrong defensive style to go six (or three or four) with Benn at his sharpest, but could certainly take him early if he was careful.
