For obvious reasons this fight doesn't get talked about too much around these here parts, but a pal and I watched it back late last year, and beyond the horrifical tragedy of its conclusion, this fight was off the chain crazy in terms of its intensity. 2 massive hitters, with McClellan being the superior boxer/fighter but also possessing an arrogance which forever allowed Benn chances to get back in with monstrous shots of his own, and a never say die attitude. It's probably the craziest contest I've seen; and perhaps that led to a tragic inevitability over its legacy.
First time I saw it was about ten years ago and I had no idea of the aftermath . So all the way through I was cheering like **** ....fantastic fight
and mcclellen only received £50k for the fight don king what an icon ? tv audience was about 14 million in the uk alone i thought it was a brilliant fight do i have sympathy for mccellen -given his background nope i remember boxing in the uk took a hit afterwards with every doctor the news channels could find said to ban boxing.
I remember the build up being great, McClellan being an absolute beast and Benn was going to get slaughtered. After witnessing the first round we all thought Benn was gone for good. what transpired can only be described as an absolute classic of a fight but with a shocking outcome. Seeing the documentary with them both together after years gone by is very sad.
