I'd have loved the fight to continue because it was such a fun brawl but realistically Benn was to fast and fresh for him. Barkley looked really bad in this fight. Those who think Barkley coulda won are 'aving a steffi!
Funny since Manny Steward said that Hearns would have been able to easily hit Benn with the jab and any punch since most guys were able to hit Nigel. That once he hit him with the right Benn would be out cold. Manny said if Doug Dewitt could counter left Benn what would Hearns do to him and that anyone can talk, but Hearns was so much greater than Benn. Benn's chin was not great.
While the fight was techincally correctly stopped because of the 3 knockdown rule I would have preferred if Barkley had been allowed to continue. If it had been allowed to continue we could have witnessed an absolute classic. Benn I think would have gone onto win though. While Barkley did stagger Benn and had him on the ropes. Benn was aware of what he was doing and countering back off the ropes. When Benn did land he was able to hurt Barkley each time so I see him stopping Barkley eventually.
that would be a good fight. Although Benn was prime and Hearns past his prime at that time, it would have been exciting. I don't see an early knockout in this one. Might be more technical than people think. Which would favor Hearns. I liked Benn. I thought he was underrated. Hearns would have been tough for him, but Benn was a great fighter I thought whose only weakness I could see was his defense. When he got tired then his offense would not be enough to keep him from being hit.
Are people for real, benn was destroying him, would have knocked him out in the second round if the fight continued...
Benn was hitting him easily but Barkley hit him clean with a left counter. I agree Benn was landing easily but had Barkley been able to weather the storm and hit Benn clean Benn would have been knocked out. Benn's chin was not great and Barkley could hit. It would have taken Barkley to land a clean punch after he got the rest between rounds. I remember the interview of Barkley after the fight where he says this isn't sour grapes and then he made excuses, but I still think he had a chance in that fight. Dewitt gave Benn a better fight thatn Barkley, and Barkley was considered better than Dewitt. Incidentally both Dewitt and Barkley went 12 rounds with Thomas Hearns.
