Benn h2h that night could have beaten any Super Middle in history. Mclellon didn't 'quit' he was medically incapable of continuing. It had nothing to do with his heart or his chin. Only Mclellon knows the pain he had to endure as he suffered punch after punch from a monstrous hitter, all the while his skull filling with fluid. This is the reality of what occured.

The fight has its place in history but don't forget

Who is the young man with his right hand on Geralds shoulder because he is an absolute pot model of McClellan...not just a bit, but a clone

To be fair to McGuigan hecwas not to know about McClellans health at the end of the fight. Having been involved in his own ring tragedy he would not have made those comments if he had the slightest inkling of what was going on with McClellan.
You can tell that being in a fight with such tragic consequenes has had a profound effect on McGuigan, Benn and Eubank.
I remember rooting for Watson so much in the second Eubanks fight and lke Benn against McLellan Eubanks refused to be beaten that night

I remember my dad (who wasn't interested in boxing) ringing me and saying he had just watched an amazing boxing match, did I watch it? I couldn't actually speak properly as I was still shaking with stress - I could barely breathe beyond the 4th round . You really got your moneys worth with Nigel.

In the interview with G-Man since he asks 'what colour is water?' - like a child migfht ask...And his sister is really bitter towards Benn.

As for the stuff about G-Man's tastes in animal cruelty - i hate it when some posters on here ( General forum ) say he got what he deserves...He deserved to win the fight in truth if the first round is anything to go by - but then again, is there a rule that the fighter must be in the ring before the count starts?

it was Gary Newbon doing the interview after the fight from memory and I thought it was Jim Watt that made the comments about heart rather than McGuigan. Either way, it wasn't immediately apparent how bad the situation was.

Lots of legend about this fight because people don't really want to watch it, myself included.

I wasn't saying he quit. We all know he didn't. I was saying if you listen to the commentry it is cringeworthy because at the time they thought he was quitting. At no point was I saying he quit. He was clearly a very brave man who paid an awful price pursuing greatness in the noble art.

There are some nice documentarys about his progress on youtube.

Roy Jones has financially supported him. Though he says he won't visit him untill he retires as it would be an all to real reminder of what can happen to anyone if it goes wrong.

You may be right about Watt. Was speaking from memory. And whoever it was I wasn't having a dig at them as no-one knew the extent of the situation. It is just cringeworthy to listen back to.

The most hyper I have ever been by a mile watching boxing, unbelievable.

There was an article , can't remember who, who was with McLellan a bit in his training. He kept just practising the big right hand down, over and over again as if he knew how it would play out...it nearly did but he didn't account for Benns heart that night though...and actually getting up!

GM seemed to be blowing quite early on as if he hadn't fully prepared for 12 rounds, I Can't remember the round, it was later on, but Benn threw a punch and missed and ended up cracking his head on GM's nose. Things seemed to go downhill from there quite rapidly for McLellan.

    Awesome fight though.

If a fighter is knocked out of the ring he has 20 seconds to get back to the scrape unassisted

Boxing really did have a hold on the public back then with thebig fights on ITV.
Warren has shown with Hatton that you can build a fighter on Sky but with Khan the PPV is just not yet warranted and I will find a stream then watch the ineviatble repeat on sky sports if the fight warrants it.

I've just re-watched the fight again in full on youtube and also the video interview of McClellan years later by famed boxing photographer Teddy Blackburn. It was an amazing fight, one if the outcome had been different (G-Man still having his health) would be one of the greats and maybe would have spawned a rematch.

It was so tragic how it ended and I remember watching that fight as a 10 year old boy with my dad, routing for Benn. Unbelievable end to the fight.....still makes me so sad to think of the life McClellan has led since then.

It's not Benn's fault, boxing can be a brutal sport and as Brendan Ingle famously said "It's the only way you can legally kill someone". Watching the fight back I think with hindsight of course, GM's corner should have thrown in the towel, I know he knocked Benn down in the 8th but still, his mouthguard was hanging out for the last 5 rounds, it was crazy!!

It's such a shame he never received a pension from the sport, and it's nice to see that people like RJJ have made financial contributions in the past.

GM could have been a boxing great, he ruled the Middleweight division and was moving up to Super-middle to challenge for titles there and in all fairness looked like he would in the early rounds. Good luck to the guy with his daily struggle, really feel for him!
