I spent about 3 hours last night watching some of the build up, the fight itself and some of the interviews with both fighters since. First time i've watched it since the fight itself (I was 11 I think at the time). Brilliant fight. Very hard to watch knowing full well what happens afterwards. Brings a tear to your eye watching Mclellan interviews since then. Love the fact that he seems so happy when that guy says he was his favourite fighter
Yep. I forgot who the guy was who interviewd him but he seemed to be genuinely well liked by McLellan, with Gerald even remembering his name. It's genuinely heart wrenching to watch some of it but like you say its nice to see that he isn't in complete darkness and that he still gets some form of enjoyment
Benn wasn't actually hypnotised...he and McKenna created a seperate "Nigel" who was the one who was getting hit and hurt in the fight (don't know the details, and don't much want to know)....hence the "We" comments
Yeah I mean don't get me wrong before that fight Mclellen 'alegedly' was into some nasty stuff dog fighting and all. But no-one deserves what happened that night (despite what some idiots say) and I only wish him the best. He was a great fighter!
I just read this article from 2001. Its almost exactly as I remember. http://observer.guardian.co.uk/osm/story/0,,583541,00.html
A couple of years ago was there not a dinner in his honour to help take care of him, that was picketed by the animal rights lot for what he allegedlty did with dogs. I rememebr reading an interview with his former manager who said he'd bring home stray dogs from the dog pound, and blindfold and disable them, and have his dog kill them, which was shocking, first of all for that to happen, but secondlty to talk about something like that now that he's a disabled man who needs all the love and support he can get, i mean y not bring itup when he's the biggest thing in boxing and earning you millions?
How have you been watching the build-up? On tape or somewhere on the internet? Just read an interview with Brendan Ingle and he says that McClellan had been saying some bad things before the fight. Anyone know what they were? Just wondering because I always thought McClellan was more of a quiet guy than a trash-talker.
