Bennie was well appreciated, had almost a cult-like ‘champion of the people’ following and was the epitome of Philly boxing and the middleweight scene there.

On the other hand, he had a hard and very definable ceiling. If the championship level is the top tier and the very best contenders are the next, he was in the third tier most of his career (and for a long time), more of a 6-10 type contender than a top five. Not only did Monzon and Valdez handle him somewhat with ease, he also couldn’t climb over Emile Griffith or Vito Antuofermo or Luis Rodriguez or others who were below them.

He had one gear I think — it was a good motor that ran on pretty high octane, but he wasn’t able to raise the level of his game nor do I think he ever really learn any new tricks nor absorb anything from his experience against the better fighters he fought that was able to raise his game in any way. You’d think that experience would have helped him avoid some of his curious losses against non-contenders along the way.

Bennie Briscoe was Bernard Hopkins’ idol ...that’s why he fights out of a crouch
