Looking for a detailed analysis of how a prime Briscoe does as a current middleweight. Is he the champion? A champion?
Im not so sure a detailed analysis is needed..not that I could give a good one anyway...He would chop down Sturm quite easily. as Felix has shown a tendency to be easily dragged away from his gameplan and durability issues. I think him vs Abe would be a good fight...But as much as I like Abe (ive been pretty high on him since he beat Hamden) for every impressive performance he backs it up with a phoned in effort against often a fairly mediocre foe. With a guy like Briscoe you cant have that kind of fight to fight inconsistency, you cant even have round to round inconsistency because he can flip a fight on you very quickly given the chance. I could see Pavlik picking up a lot of rounds with his outside work and solid offensive fundamentals...but I still have concerns over his durability over the long haul. Briscoe would most defintely be a titlist in a post-Hops era...He is a very solid chance of cleaning out the division based on the form of the two best guys around right now, but they havent finished yet
I think Briscoe would absolutely slaughter Abraham. That high guard leaves him open for bodyshots, and some of the most hurtful bodyshots ever at MW came from Briscoe.
I think your not wrong...though I dont feel that just because he has the high guard peek-a-boo defence doesnt mean body shots are his achilles heel...His body shape and the length of his arms seem to cpmpliment each other..when he covers up he is generally hard to hit with legitmate clean shots, body or head. I think Miranda was hitting him low so often out of frustration of not being able get through or around that guard. Benny however is a totally different kettle of fish...Id see him grinding down Abe aswell but I think its a decent scrap whilst it lasts.
Briscoe was a fighter that ruined you, as he said in a quote, how they had to go or they'd be ruined after he got through with them. He really was a hurtful puncher, especially with his body attack. He mad the Ring Magazine's top 100 punchers list for a good reason.
Too easy to outbox even by semi-mediocre boxers. He'd be in and out of Top 10 all the time, but always outside of top 3.
Yeah, Monzon sure outboxed him easily in their first fight. Eddie Mustafa Muhammad too! And Griffith, who got away with a MD. Hmmmmm.
Did he only have three fights in his career? Or let me guess, you didn't read any reports of his other fights.
Briscoe dropped the ball in his prime maybe like twice...and then went on to immediately make up for those hiccupps via the brutal stoppage of the men who caused them. In this era he probably wouldnt be fighting 6 or 7 times a year like he was back then..He would be carefully managed like most other fighters. At his best he was far from easy to outbox..anyone can see that.
Most probably haven't heard of it but Abraham seems to injure his ribs every time he fights. He has a very fragile body and Briscoe would surely take advantage of it. I'm not sure if Briscoe could ever be a dominant champion due to his fairly one-dimensional style but he could have probably won a belt or two these days. He could also make 154.
look not only would Briscoe be a champ now ... i could pick another 3 or 4 generations when he would be a champ. The younger Bernie was a supremely accomplished boxer and even the more shop worn Bernie didnt make it a picnic for my hero Hagler. one thing a lot of boxers lack these days, with the exception of guys like Bhop, are those dark arts skills boxers of yesteryear had in spades. The ability niggle and offset opponents to disarm on the inside. They dont make them like Bernie anymore!
