ive always wondered. there are 3 versoins 1. he was jewish but didnt openly admit it main reason he wore the star of david on his trunks 2. he found the star of david a "powerful symbol". max baer had a very similar motive for having a SoD on his trunks aswell and louis had a star as well once. 3. he had to borrow some shorts and borrowed a pair from a jewish boxer.remember his trunks were nameless. became his cliche and just kept with it. your thoughts please.i know it doesnt effect his standing as a boxer...if it does then you got problems. just wondering
i read once that he said he practiced the jewish faith.......but couldnt become a jew cause his parents were not jews. as for baer he just wanted to cash in on the jewish marked, cause ethnic rivaleries were popular back then. in fact, he was of german catholic stock.
You Serious about Baer?? I watched him just a few nights ago and was thinking, "What a brave guy!" , wearing his religion like that. What a shame to find out he exploited it.
Baer had a grandfather that was a German Jew, I think his mother was gentile, I thought Briscoe was a black Jew but some just like the biblical charactor of David who was a brave warrior, Jewish is a religion not a race, Ali's grandfather was suposed to be White Irish but he is still Black. Max Baer was German but suposedly still had a bit of Jewish that he was proud of because I can not see him doing it to be popular, other than N.Y. where would being a Jew be popular in those days
well the times baer wore the star of david he used to great advantage schmelling(german), braddock(irish who wore a shamrock on his trunks),primo (italian) i think it aided his career to be jewish and why not he wasnt offending anyone. more or less showed the jewish community a boxer that could represent them.
If I remember correctly, Briscoe's first manager -- or some influential figure in his early boxing career -- was Jewish. Briscoe supposedly wore the Star of David on his trunks out of respect for that person.
yes, without a doubt. his manager even cleared it up with the words: "I saw him under the shower. trust me, he isnt jewis"!
are well this links in to the james toney thing. he wore the SoD becuase jackie kallen was his manager and stuck them on every pair of trunnks she had. for her fighters..i find it pretty intereszting that.
well we arnt quite shure. yoel judah is jewish. i think he is a hebrew isrealite... but zab has i think just been lumped up as being jewish but just has a jewish father.
Judah has been referred to in the press as "the best Jewish fighter of all time." [16] Judah's father is an avowed Israelite, or Black Jew[17], and Judah's family has declared themselves Jewish.[18] If Judah is considered Jewish, then Judah was one of four top Jewish boxers in December 2007, the others being Dmitry Salita, the undefeated junior welterweight (27-0-1), Roman Greenberg, the undefeated heavyweight (27-0-0), and Yuri Foreman (24-0-0), the undefeated middleweight. At the same time, in 2006 Judah thanked his lord and savior Jesus Christ after his fight against Mayweather. Such a statement would suggest that at that point in time, at least, he would not be recognized as being Jewish by the mainstream Jewish community[citation needed], even by the most liberal standards
I thouht for sure Judah was a 100 percent Black Israelite. And I thought Toney wore the star on his trunks as a tribute to Kallen. There is a fight, I think his 16th pro fight, in which Kallen was his manager, but Toney did not have the star on his trunks yet - I believe it was the fight for the Michigan Middleweight Title.
