How many remember this guy ? Quality Philadelphian middleweight of the 1970's. Do n't recall seeing any of his fights on English TV but I used to read about him in Ring Magazine. Unlucky to come along at same time as Hagler (Though he outpointed him in one of their fights,I think) Monzon and Valdez. He would definitely be a world champion today.
He fought a young Hagler when he was past it and lost a 10 round decision fairly wide. They only fought once. Your thinking of Watts or Munroe Briscoe was a good tough philly pressure fighter and a brillaint body puncher.
Bennie was once quoted as saying that he aimed his jab to the back of his opponents head - through the front ! Bennie was Predictable - Predictably Hard Hitting, Predictably Aggressive, Predictably unquenchable, Predictably a hard painful nights work for anyone, It really is a tribute to how good Monzon and Valdez were at their peak that they beat Bennie clearly (albeit Monzons first fight with Bennie Carlos enjoyed home advantages) And Valdez had three wars with Bennie becoming the only man to stop him, Along with Carlos, Bennie help Ruin Rodrigo such was the punishment meated out. The Mundine camp obviously thought Bennie was there for the Taking, but Bad Mistake as Bad Bennie had other ideas, The french Called him "Le Robot" as i recall Not the most versatile Fighter for sure, but for Heart, toughness, and Determination Mr Briscoe was some peice of work, - in full flow, there was no Brakeman on Bennies Train.
It was, wasn't it? Although I don't think Monzon, in the first fight, necessarily enjoyed the home advantage. The Argentine scoring system was rubbish; if you didn't dominate a fight, it was declared a draw.
Clinton, Manassa - Thanks Guys, Bennie must rank with the best never to have won a world title, his statistical won lost drawn record does not tell the half of it, Its a pleasure to remember such a warrier.
Briscoe was a terror in rematches, he literally beat 75% of the fighters who beat him in rematches, usually stopping them. That's the most troublesome forgotten thing about Bennie. Also, even in the second Monzon fight where you'll hear that Bennie was "dominated" he still managed hurt Monzon worse then anyone else ever had.
