Larry Gains, Toronto Negro who holds the British Empire heavyweight title and who last night overwhelmed Primo Carnera, declared today he hoped to get a bout soon with either Jack Sharkey or Max Schmeling. Gains got the decision over Carnera after ten rounds of fast work which left the Italian puzzled. In the 10th fans howled as Gains chased the giant around the ring. Carnera was at a loss after his blows failed to stop Gains, who wove in and out about Carnera's guard, hitting almost at will.

Carnera had 61 fights under his belt at the time.

Film of Gains v Carnera does not bare this out.

"But against Carnera you did have to be careful. For such a big man, he was deceptively fast. He didn't really punch his weight, but he was a very damaging puncher just the same" - Larry Gains autobiography. Page 107

But remember he was the heavyweight champion of all the world. No one can take that away from him." - Larry Gains Autobiography page 108

Didn't seem to bother him against Gastanaga. Or, was this just because that particular bout was fixed?

This is not evident at all going by the film. Primo appears to score a flash knockdown if anything.

Gains hits Carnera with right hands to the head whenever he throws them.Carnera's defence in this fight is terrible.

Yeah - I hadn't gotten around to Gains. I wonder what the excuses are for that one. Ingrowing toenail, perhaps?

The guy had gland problems due to his size. It's not at all peculiar. Many other fighters have declined over a medical condition. I can guarantee you can't fight with kidney failure.

Didn't Cleveland Williams get excused for having a kidney removed after his shooting?

Very few looked good vs Louis so to quote Joe is not ideal evidence.

The idea is Carnera is much better than given credit for. Close scrutiny reveals just that. No one is saying he was a great hwt but certainly not the side show low talent we have always thought of.

Why couldn't Baer land against Loughran and Braddock both won by jabbing?
Watch Gains tee off on Carnera and tell me with straight face that Carnera had good defence.Watch novice Impelletiere out box Carnera early on and tell me honestly that Carnera had good defence. It looks crude and wild because it is.

Unfortunately, there has been suggestion in another thread that Carnera is some sort of bona fide Super Heavyweight Great.
