How did he get caught [over and over again, ] by a wild swinging slugger who telegraphed his punches?
Did his Benitez like radar inadvertedly get switched off that night.?

Baer quit ,Sharkey was only in there for his pension.
We know why Baer lost, he had a monumental panic attack and was frozen with fear.
How did a prime ,28years old ex heavyweight champion who had been the champion a year earlier get so thoroughly outclassed by a 20 year old?
So comprehensively outclassed in every single department he didn't win a round ,or even half a round!
If Carnera's defence was indeed "marvellous " how could this have happened?

but how many rounds did they win? Louis outclassed everybody. You cannot slam Carnera anymore than anyone else. That's how come it was such a shock that Louis lost to schmeling. Even then, it was tactics rather than class that beat him.

So we're basing the attributes of fighters based on the day after reports of their worst defeats?

Wonder what they said about Klitschko after losing to Purrity. Should we look into it, and see how the press lambasts good fighters on their worst nights?
Should we see what they said about Frazier losing to Foreman?
Hell, didn't a certain Joe Louis get a certain rep for holding his left too low?

This is the problem when you can't place things in their proper context.

    Very well said.

There's a lot of knuckle headed conclusions drawn at times like that. then as now.

No Louis did not outclass everybody, less than a year later Schmeling would knock him out and he was decidedly underwhelming against Pastor in their first fight, he was far from the finished article in 1935.

Keep patting each other on the back because no-one else, apart from Demented 1234 agrees with you.

The problem with your tag team is you never answer inconvenient questions. BTW Louis got criticized for not returning his left to the guard position after jabbing , a subtle difference but important.

Louis looked great against Carnera, except that he leaned a bit to his right with his left hand low. This was no problem against Carnera's overhand rights, since Louis went under them. But it seemed like he wouldn't really have anywhere to go to get away from a sharp straight right. That was probably what Schmeling was referring to when he said "I see something". But I guess Louis corrected that after the first Schmeling fight.

I would have to rewatch it again but I have a write up of Louis Vs Schmeling 2 and he did two things. One, defensively when he threw a single jab he took a half step back. And the other (which won him the fight so quickly) was feinting the jab and throwing something else.

Actually a stance where one positions the upper body off center to the right is classic boxing. It places your head off center and away from punches. Louis issue was dropping that jab.

The next block of scribbling describes the second round. "F. down" is, of course, a reference to another Frazier knockdown. What one can decipher of the next sentence alludes to the terrible something-or-other "we heard in the gym"—that Frazier was being subjected to the same awesome blows Foreman delivered to the big punching bag.
