It's very close. I vote Pep on the basis i personally think he was the slightly more talented fighter.

Willie Pep. Leonard was great, but not as great as Wil O' The Wisp, in my humble opinion.

Benny, and it's the CV that does it for me. The man dominated what was perhaps the greatest ever lightweight era for 8 years. You could argue the toss from now until the cows come home as to who was greater in a head-to-head sense, but Leonard's record of fighters faced and beaten edges him in front of Willie as an overall ATG in my book.

I think Pep dominated one of the greatest featherweight eras of all time. Did it for a whole decade too.

True, true - I'd never question Pep's level of competition in a broad sense. It's a very close call as to who was greater, one that I wouldn't argue should the general consensus be that Pep deserved the nod. Just my own opinion that Leonard's comp gives him a slight edge ;)

I can def see that! Leonard did beat slightly better competition. Pep holds the single greatest win of the two.

And if you could evaluate both fighters in two things: who had better resume, and who was better fighter overall?

Why do you think that was one of the greatest FW eras? After Pep and Saddler, the next best FW of the era was Chalkey Wright, who could barely break into the top 5 in Henry Armstrong's era, and only moved to the top of the division after the top players of the Armstrong era either moved up or burned out.

    1. Armstrong was in a very good era himself. I rate Henry very very highly. I think very highly of him h2h as well from 126-135lb. I am tempted to rank Armstrong # 1 all time. I just might do that in my next rankings. What a resume Armstrong has too. He has the longevity and the quality.

    2. Sandy and Pep are pretty big names. We are talking two top 3 FWs of all time in one weight class.

    3. Chalky Wright is an ATG hall of famer. Also rated in Rings top 100 punchers of all time list.

    4. Some of the other Ring Magazine top contenders like Humberto Sierra, Phil Terranova, Sal Bartolo were pretty dangerous challengers in any era.

Dejá vú? Didn´t we have this one only a few weeks ago? Anyway, Leonard, it´s very close though. Could easily be the other way around.

Saddler's appearance marked the end of Pep's division dominance though. What of the era that Pep actually dominated?

What makes him an ATG? He lost every fight he ever had to a great fighter or HOFer, sometimes very embarrassingly, and his biggest career win was probably Lulu Costantino.

    Dangerous, yes.

    Leading challengers - that's debatable.
