Berchelt is a big boy, but he doesn't carry big boy pop. It's a good move because he can't make 130, but it's also a bad move because he's very limited to begin with and the boys at 135 are bigger and stronger. The only guys that he could fight and not get mauled are Lomachenko and Haney. Berchelt is SOL, basically.
Um, Berchelt has pretty high KO%. He will be just fine at 135. The guys there will respect his power. Plus Berchelt is a big motherucker as well. Moving up will be good for him. He can maybe now focus more on his boxing than weight. But you are right about his skills. The guys at 135 are pretty big, so Berchelt will have to adapt his style as the distance and angles will be a bit different.
He mostly knocked out low level dudes and his best wins are Miura and Vargas. His power won't be an issue for the guys at 135.
That´s not how these things work. Even if he wont be stopping legit lightweights, he will be hurting them. No one at 135 is just going to walk through his punches.
My first thought is his chin is likely cracked after the beating he sustained, and I also wonder if his will to win will suffer a little. He took a frightful hiding and now is going up against bigger dudes. It's generally untrue that a guy benefits in performance by moving up; everyone boils down for a reason.
Berchelt is a volume puncher. He wears guys down. You're impressed with his KO ratio and power. I'm not. And I don't think the guys at 135 will be either.
Everyone is just going to Margarito him? How disconnected from reality are you? Berchelt has a good punch and he is a big ****ing guy. No one will just laugh and walk through his shots.
Like I said, you're impressed w/ his with power and his padded KO ratio, but I'm not. And I don't think anyone at 135 will fear or respect his power. Berchelt's power, which is already overrated, won't be a factor in the lightweight division. And I'll be proven right when he moves up and fights a non-bum. Let's get an official statement from you. You are saying that Berchelt will be a big puncher at lightweight?
That was a pretty bad beating Berchelt just absorbed. If he takes significant time off to rebuild and heal, maybe polish up his defense a bit, could be a good thing for him though I don't think he'll be more than a contender in the current mix at 135. I'll bet all of the divas will line up to keep ducking one another and look good against him though.
this wasnt a choice its a necessity. Berchelt was killing himself to make the weight limit and then rehydrating, he already looked weak and cumbersome against valdez in a fight that took years off his career. moving up to his natural weight was the only option.
No. I never made the argument that he was a big puncher. He clearly had good power at 130. With it he broke down some though guys. With volume, like you said. At 135 I don´t expect him to stop as many guys. But it doesn´t mean that guys will just brush off his punches. He is a big man, accurate and has heavy hands. No one will just walk through his punches.
He may have been killing himself to cut weight at 130. That wrecks your chin due to the fact, when a fighter cuts weight, they lose some of the protective fluids of the brain in doing so. These fluids are a cushion for sudden shock. Even though he will be fighting bigger guys, his chin may be better at 135. We'll see. Hope he doesn't have lasting effects from that beating he took.
