I’m going with Cooney. While I WON’T label Gerry as a “ master of the sweet science “, He was a far better boxer AND puncher than Chris Arreola.

Cooney..... No contest. Cooney at his best stressed and hurt a prime or close to prime ATG. He also destroyed some very good fighters, that were admittedly past their primes ( However isn't that what was expected of him , and what he was supposed do destroy past prime fighters?) How many of the fighters Stivern faced would even be considered good?
How many he faced and beat were considered good at one time?
Please..... Cooney would destroy Stivern easily, he beats every heavyweight ranked today with the possible exception of Fury. Including that overrated Wilder, and the body beautiful but subpar skilled quitter Joshua.
Say what you will about Cooney. ( Personally, I believe so much hope was placed on him by the majority of Americans, once he didn't quite reach the top, he suddenly became a Terrible heavyweight by the majority of those same Americans. Which in my opinion is unfair. ) He was better skilled, and probably hit just as hard or harder than most heavyweights in history.
Compared to Stivern, Cooney would be considered ATG.

Cooney would annihilate Stiverne. Nothing Stiverne ever showed me was enough for me to think he was any better than Tony Galento.

I've always given him credit. His fight against Holmes in itself demonstrated he had ability. His biggest issues were his mind, and not being able to get back on the horse.
America of the time, ( Not to diffrent from now) also share responsibility. When the hopes of the majority places so much emphasis on him winning , including the president of the country , because he happened to look like them.
When he failed to deliver, that same majority turn their backs on him. Under that type pressure, when he is literally carrying the weight and hopes of most of the country. That broke him.

A H2H fantasy matchup between a former HW titlist and a former contender while both where in their athletic primes. That's what this forum is for, no?
