He would have got paid though? And the fans would get to see the fight. I think he's perfectly within his rights to walk away but who the hell wants to see Wilder Vs Stiverne again??

Makes as much sense as walking out on a (minimum) $1.4 million payday for a fight both of them tested positive for lol

I think Stiverne's pay day will come in court - or settled out of it - and he'll probably still get mandatory or another fight for that position. Two pay days, one fight. Smart move....

His lawyers are going to laugh all the way to the bank if Stiverne goes that route.

I don't know what court could enforce collection of anything he'd be awarded, and those fees will add up fast for him. It's expensive enough for domestic matters- make it international, and whether it's even worth his time becomes a real question.

He may get another mandatory crack, but since this wasn't WBC sanctioned, he could've taken this fight, still had a mandatory fight, and saved himself on any legal fees.

Good point. Maybe then he will use his legal case as a bargaining chip. I doubt he would walk away from such a good pay day without legal advice and a degree of certainty he's not walking away from a good pay day with no financial fall back in doing so. Maybe there's clauses in the contract, who knows?

Good counterpoints. It's all speculation once you boil it down that far since we don't have the contract info.

I'd like to think he's acting in his best interest because I like seeing fighters end up with some money at the end of their careers, but I've seen a lot of knucklehead decisions that come from these guys getting bad advice.

Bermane sounded like he was pretty confident that he will be instated as mandatory for Wilder after this fiasco. I guess the payday vs. Wilder would be much higher than what he was lined up to earn tonight. He's a massive underdog in both fights anyways.

I dont think that's true. The purse for the Povetkin fight was even (much) bigger then what he received to fight Wilder as a champ.

Duhaupas really deserves respect here. I fully expect him to go out on his shield, or even win this.

And all for a fraction of what Stiverne would have earned I'm guessing. Can't see him winning with zero days preparation though. Unless he's been ticking over in the gym. Even so, winning is a big ask...

I thought these guys were supposed to be tough? If he went through with the fight it was a win/win for him. Yet he takes his ball and goes home. Oh how the might have fallen.
