Remember in that fight he had some hotel or something advertised on his back. Well from what I heard he took the $100,000 he got from that and bet it on himself. I think he was pissed he was such an underdog going in.
He made only $350 on his debut. His minimum for the Oscar fight was $10,000,000. He made $2.75m versus Trinidad. He made a minimum of $3 million versus Kelly Pavlik. He made a cool $3.8 million fighting Howard Eastman, who got $800,000 in comparison. His first $1 million payday was against Keith Holmes. He made $100,000 in the first Antwun Echols fight. He made $1,125,000 in Robert Allen III. He collected $1.25 million against Morrade Hakkar. His payday against Syd Vanderpool was $525,000. For the Echols rematch, he pocketed $600,000.
I didn't think there was as much money in the Hopkins-De La Hoya fight as there actually was. Oscar get paid big for that. I knew he'd get a lot but not $30 million.
The odd's most certainly were not 2/1 Trinidad for that fight. Many boxing fans and insiders knew damn well Hopkins had a great chance to win, but the casual fans (and most at HBO Sports and PPV) thought it was simply a formality en route to a Trinidad vs Roy Jones superfight. I don't remember the exact odds but Hopkins was a big time underdog in that fight.
Thanks for the info :good. At least I'm getting a better idea of his pay grade over time. He constantly harps on about his financial acumen, and how he apparently didn't lose any money in the Credit Crisis  :blabla
I remember that fight being marketed as the historic 20th defense of the middlweight title. So Hopkins got paid big.
