maybe i wasnt clear in what i said, no way do i think dlh is a better boxer than whittaker. discounting roys athleticism and noting hopkins mastery of the classical boxing fundmantals would be like making a comparison between the an athletic boxer and a well schooled boxer such as dlh and whittaker, and concluding that dlh is a better boxer because he stuck to the fundamentals of boxing more than whittaker.
Even at fundamentals Whitaker was superior to DLH. Better jab, better footwork, better bodypunching technique, better head movement. Oscar had slightly superior blocking skills, but that's it when looking at their fudamentals. The fact that Pea's reflexes were vastly superior to DLH's is why he could so many more unusual and really never seen before things in the ring, but it doesn't take away from Pea's edge in fundamental boxing.
you see its hard to argue that hopkins would beat jones...when jones already beat hopkins...but i sure as hell would have loved to see a prime hopkins in a rematch with him...and if hopkins would have won that rematch then, for me, he would be the greatest pound for pound fighter of the last generation...its the only blot on his record i think..
watch sweet pea. i'd say speed wise, dlh and sweet pea are pretty equal, dlh had more power, and had a distinct height advantage over his opponents. but watch sweet pea man, i wasn't lying about him being a boxing genius. sweet pea moved in tight circles, looking for angles, everything he through came off his beautiful jab. ok, i understand what you are saying, but i think you have it kinda backwards, sweet pea was very much a foundamental boxer,
Hopkins is not better than Roy Jones from a H2H stand point or a resume stand point. Therefore Jones is a better fighter.
Excellent post. The Roy huggers will never concede though. Everyone knows Roy wanted no parts of a rematch.
Here's an interesting excerpt from an article I read on another site; "Probably the only other time that you could say Jones ducked a fighter was in the spring of 2002. The previous year Bernard Hopkins had unified the Middleweight title with an impressive knock out of the then undefeated Felix Trinidad and both Hopkins and Jones defended their crowns on the same HBO telecast. Afterwards Larry Merchant tried to get the two to agree to fight each other, but Roy Jones insisted on a 60/40 split while Hopkins wanted parity. I wouldnt necessarily say that Jones Ducked Hopkins because the very next year Roy moved up to challenge John Ruiz for the WBA heavyweight title, which at the time was regarded as a much more dangerous fight. Still after all that Hopkins has accomplished a lot of insiders wonder if Jones had already recognized the extent of Hopkinss greatness before he actually demonstrated it in the ring."
the whole bhop was green wen he lost to roy line is BULL**** it was roy's 1st title aswell, end of the day roy is just better, always was always will be.
60/40 was more than reasonable. Jones held a win over Hopkins, was universally recoinised p4p number 1 and Hopkins was moving up in weight.
Hopkins always knew he couldn't really solve the RJJ puzzle....That's why he always asked for at least an equal pay when RJJ was still P4P #1 and he was coming off a his first real big win against a former welterweight in Trinidad...
One guy wanted 50/50, the other wanted 60/40. How about 55/45? Of course, Roy would never have entertained such a thought. He knew what a threat Hopkins was. As a result, he held stong to his bull**** 60/40 offer. I don't expect ardent Roy fans to agree, but the truth is Hopkins would've probably beaten Roy in 2002. Roy knew what a dangerous fight it would be, and did not want to take it.
At that point, besides Trinidad, the best opposition to Hopkins had been Antwun Echols... If Jones kept fighting only the equivalent at Light Heavy without going to Heavyweight, he would have had at least 20 straight title defenses himself too ! RJJ gets so many more critics than B-Hop simply because he was much more naturally gifted than him and people ususally make it tougher on the better man...
