I rank Hopkins very highly myself as a H2H middleweight...but that being said, the tenth round act against Calzaghe was just embarassing. Great fighters always want to fight and don't look for excuses. Just off the top of my head, how about Ray Robinson in his second fight with Fullmer after getting hit low, he nearly separates Fullmer's head from his body with the 'perfect ' left hook.
How about Monzon getting IMMEDIATELY after getting hit by Valdez's crushing right hand in the second round? Monzon did not want to give Valdez any satisfaction or hope that he was a better man. Greats don't make excuses, they make results in the ring.
