Yes, Hopkins had a better defence than Mayweather. A much more functional defence, at least.

Do you think Hopkins was prime against Taylor? His defence was still pretty good, actually.

Hopkins has been fighitng smaller fighters his whole career.

Floyd has been fighitng bigger fighters his whole career.

No comparison. Floyd rolls punches, counters, slips, fights in the pocket.

Hopkins smothers, holds, head butts, ect.

I'd take Floyds D any day of the week.

Hopkins has a great chin but more importantly it is his defense that prevents opponents from landing cleanly. Defensively he knows how to neutralize opponents offensive weapons as in the Trinidad match his defense not chin made Tito's left hook a non factor. Big difference. His defense not chin made him completely unavailable to Pavlik for any type of offense.
Floyd may be quicker in counter punching but Hopkins is far more effective defensively and against some of the most dangerous fighters even when he was the older and slower boxer.
He neutralized Ko artists starting with Syd Vanderpool, Tito, De la Hoya, Calzhage, Jones and Pavlik even being 18 years older.

He beat Taylor in the first fight and was robbed.

To be the man you must beat the man. Taylor did not beat the man.
