I have to go with Toney. Competed from 160-heavyweight....winning 3 world titles, beat better competition, was able to compete as a world class heavyweight well into his 30's becasue of his high skill set.

    hopkins.

toney loses browny pts for wasting years of his career and then getting caught for drug taking not once but twice.

hopkins was a consistent champion for nearly 10 yrs. he was delivering while toney was defending his wbu light heavyweight title on the club circuit. :patsch

It seems this thread is starting to take a turn, the first few responses could draw nothing but a big laugh from me.

Come ON.. look at the fighters on Hopkins' resume, and don't give me that "blown up welter" ****. Most didn't give him a chance in hell against Trinidad. He also gave a prime Roy Jones a highly competitive fight, has never looked bad against anyone in the last 15 years or so, and only lost in close battles with Taylor.

You've got to separate what Toney COULD have achieved from what he did. If he'd have won belts legitimately at heavyweight and stayed fit enough to unify, there might actually be an argument for him.

Yes, Toney proved his superiority by his performances against such opposition as the great Dave Tiberi, whom he has given an outright gift against.

That it's absolutely ridiculous to assume the weight drained, skinny version of Toney at MW could've beaten Hopkins. Toney consistently moved up because of his inability to make the weight, also referred to as being a lardass.

least hopkins didn't get away with it against guys like dave tiberi. :yep

toney was lucky to get decisions even if his middleweight prime.

    against guys like reggie johnson.

respect to johnson, but hops would have turned him over at anytime.

toney got sent packing by a prime RJ.

least hops turned up against a prime RJ and gave it ago.

    hops is the greater fighter.

    simple as.

Hopkins... by far. I don't see how anyone can rank James Toney higher... based on what?
