Toney is the better fighter head to head. A waste of talent, but still achieved as much, if not more than Hopkins, who made the very most of his talents.

Toney beat better fighters who were bigger than him also. Michael Nunn was a superb win, as was McCallum, Jirov etc. And to go right up to HW and be a top contender is some achievement.

Thats what makes Toney so unreal. A lot of people agree that he was a 'wasted talent'. And even then he accomplished a hell of a lot in the sport of boxing. What does that say about his potential? How high up the all time rankings could this guy have gone? If he would have beaten Roy Jones it would have been absurd. His longetivity and his time at the heavyweight division was impressive as hell.

    Hopkins

Even H2H I'd pick Hopkins over Toney. Two reasons... gas & brains. Toney will be the one to run out of gas by the 8th round. Hopkins is too smart to let himself be smacked around by Toney's spectacular counterpunching.

This isn't even counting Hopkins ability to drag any fight into the dirt. We'll see Toney taking more hits from B-hops just like Winky did. The man is a master at taking the best weapon away from another fighter.

Difficult to say actually. How do we judge this?

    1. Win/loss/draw record
    2. Quality of opposition
    3. Success against the highest level of opposition
    4. Best wins
    5. Length of time as champion
    6. Success in different divisions

    Roughly:

    1. Hopkins 48-04-01 Vs Toney 70-06-03 = About even
    2. Hopkins faced Roy Jones Junior, Glen Johnson, Trinidad, De La Hoya, Jermain Taylor, Antonio Tarver.

Toney faced Michael Nunn, Reggie Johnson, Mike McCallum (3 times - won 2, drew 1), Roy Jones Junior, Montell Griffin (2 losses), Vassiliy Jirov, Evander Holyfield, John Ruiz, Hasim Rahman, Samuel Peter

    3. Hopkins dominated Johnson, Trinidad, De La Hoya and Tarver. Close with Taylor. Ran RJJ fairly close.

Toney got the best of most excluding RJJ, Griffin and Peter.

    OK, I'm bored now :yep

But I'd say that Hopkins was the smarter fighter. Toney the marginally more talented and tougher.

If Hopkins beats Calzaghe he clearly rises above Toney in the P4P greatest of all time list.

Even if you take away his campaign at the HW division, his resume still holds more water than that of Hopkins. The only credit you can give Toney for his time at HW was that he was competitive with the top guys when clearly past his best.

james toney overall career wise was'nt a one punch ko fighter. so it was'nt like when he went up to the heavy's that he was ko'ing guys miracuously,he was still the same fighter.
