I seem to have missed something, when was Toney a "world class heavyweight"? The time I know of that Toney "competed" at HW he was never more than an obese joke that never did anything and only got big fights because of the name he made at lower weight classes.

Toney had eight fights at HW. All but one of his fights at HW was competitive, yes or no?

Toney's physique and conditioning may have been poor but who can deny his fights were difficult to watch. Also who can deny his skills and ring generalship didn't carry over into the heavyweights?

Head to head... i think hopkins is WAY TOO SMART for toney. He would come into the ring knowing exactly how to beat toney, and he would execute it to perfection... winning 8 rounds to 4. he wouldnt allow toney to anything that toney likes to do, he would use movement, a good jab, clinching, to win rounds... they would be tough contested rounds in some cases, because they are both great fighters, but this is a bad matchup for toney imo.

throughout their careers... i can def see how its harder to pick a guy. Both have their faults. Hopkins best wins come over natural 154lbers... and johnson - tarver. Toney has some decent wins... but you can punch holes or lift up eathers resume if you wanted to. I am forced to go with Hopkins due to Toneys losses, lackluster performances, REPEATED steroid use and droughts in his career.

Toney is a hell of a warrior with the best chin i have ever seen.... but if i HAD to choose one i would have to go with hopkins for consistancy.

    Hopkins for me.

Toney wasted about 8 years at light heavyweight achieving nothing.

It wasnt until 2002-04 he got himself back on track and captured the cruiserweight title and performed well at heavyweight. But his heavyweight exploits are ruined and tainted by his steriod use.

i dont see how he was a joke... rock, ruiz, and peter all had rough fights with him.... he beat holyfield much worse then anyone since,

Toney at heavy was far from a joke... granted he was never near the best to me, but he did give toney fans some ground to claim he was a legit force at heavy even if his fight with ruiz was a nc, his fight with the rock was a draw and peter beat him twice... sometimes you have to look AT the fights and not what the results were to see the true story, and toney IMO can be proud of what he did at heavy, considering he shouldnt even be there imo.

Toney his resume is far better and would step up in weight to fight the best plus he was the best in three separate weights and fought well at heavy for the most part destroyed Holyfield close fight with Rahman and beat Ruiz (although it was reversed).

Toney would have beat b-hop by UD.....he was one of the best P4P fighters of the last 20 years.

He was a the most amazing stylist you will see. You talk about sitting in the "pocket", this guy did it to an art.

I wish he was around in the SM division today....Toney vs Calzaghe...haha Toney by murder

Toney was the biggest joke who was getting fights at HW in recent years, no way around that, only Rahman comes close. Ruiz, Rahman, Peter? Come on, there's nothing world class here, those are all a bunch of glorified club fighters. And you can't be serious mentioning Holyfield at that point as a notable win. Plus McToney was probably roided up for all of his fights at HW, he was dumb enough to get caught twice. He embarrassed the HW division with his ridiculous trash talk and his demeanour. He had a life and death struggle with Batchelder that's the true story of Toney at HW.

    James Toney by FAAAAAAAAAR!!

im not joking but when i watch toney's fights, it is an absolute pleasure! just watch his mastery as a boxer against iran barkley or evander holyfield. the guy is not only superior technically but also mentally!

hopkins fights are boring, toney's arnt, cos its either toney punching you or the other guy punching, toney just doesnt run. toney is soo good that he could be in punching range and still make you miss with simple defensive moves. hopkins cant do **** like that!

hopkins is good but he would have got beat like a tim littles, similar fashion. :yep

the fact toney has gone from middleweight to the heavyweights, shows how great he is technically compared to hopkins. im not a bernard hater, im a fan but i know my boxing.

at 160, both oscar and trinidad would have got sparked against James toney! :deal
i wonder how bernard would have done against some of toney's best opponents?

its ludicrous when you keep goin on about the tiberi fight. toney was busting him up him until he got tired. he was very weight drained. and on any other night he would have knocked him out.

Hopkins. More consistent, plus his career is not tainted by steroids.
