Great fight by Hopkins. As a B-Hop fan, this is the most satisfying victory since he gave Trinidad the business. I haven't seen Hopkins look this good in years. Hopkins once again proved why he is a legend. This is the fourth straight time he's taken on a top 10 p4p fighter and the 4th straight time he's been at least a 3-1 underdog at some point during the buildup to the fight. He's 3-1 in those 4 fights. All 3 of the wins were in dominating fashion and the one loss was a close SD. All of this after the age of 40. That's simply amazing. Two things really helped Hopkins look great in this fight. Number 1, he had Naazim Richardson back instead of the Joke Coach, and number 2, he wasn't fighting a lefty. On the countdown show Hopkins remarked about Pavlik's leathal right hand and asked Richardson what he was going to do about it. Richardson remarked about how he was going to put it in the same drawer as the Trinidad left hook. That's exactly what happened, and Pavlik had no plan B once he couldn't land that right hand.
Prior to fighting Cazlaghe B-Hop was 9-0 against Southpaws including great wins over Tarver and Winky Wright the two fights before. I was really impressed with Nard last night...I have jonesd on him before for fighting lighter guys but I take it all back. He is a master craftsman!
He wasn't a 3-1 underdog against Wright but I see your point. Hopkins is amazing. If you look his recent three losses he could easily have got the decision in each. I scored both Taylor fights a draw and the Calzaghe fight to Hopkins. It's certainly a bit harsh that he lost all three!
He was actually 11-0 against lefties. However, that doesn't change the fact that he looks better against righties than he does against lefties. That's the case for every orthodox fighter. Go watch the Wright and Tarver fights again. He dominated but it he basically threw one punch and held the whole time. Neither fight was particularly exciting. The same occured against Calzaghe. Against a righty, he's able to use his full offensive arsenal. The punches are also coming out an angle that he's more used to.
As close as two weeks before the fight, Hopkins was either a 2-1 or a 3-1 underdog against Winky. I know this because the editor of Ring Magazine commented about it on Philly sports talk radio show. The odds were much closer by fight time, but at one point, Winky was a comfortable favorite.
I have a feeling everybody is going to try and twist and bend and take back the unknowledgeable bull**** they talked before the fight Just like Emanuel Steward was trying to do before Larry made him stuff that bull****. I think it's safe to say most people just went with what everybody else was saying. Pretending to be expert boxing analyzers. :nut :nut :nut There were tons of chickens running around screaming Pavlik will K.T.F.O. Hopkins over and over and over.
Dude it was always about evens for that fight. The best odds for Hopkins were only ever 5/4. This reminds me a bit of Calzaghe fans claiming he was a big underdog against Lacy. His odds only ever reached 5/4 too! It was a good win for BHop but let's not try to rewrite the history!
I'm not rewritting history. Unless the editor of Ring Magazine doesn't know what he's talking about, he commented about how Winky was as high as 2-1 favorite two weeks before the fight. Again, the odds closed, but at one point Winky was a 2-1 favorite.
Plus Kelly couldn't do a damn thing with the jab, let alone double or triple, because every time he threw it Bernard drilled him with the counter right. I loved when halfway through the fight Merchant starting talking about how Kelly wasn't landing body shots. If your feet are hopelessly out of position, and you can't get inside behind a jab without eating multiple power shots, how the hell are you getting to the body? I'd have thought in the almost immediate aftermath of Cotto - Margo they'd have learned that lesson. But I'll admit straight up, I didn't make a bet in this fight. Glad as hell to see Bernard win, but it took a leap of faith to believe he was going to have legs that damn fresh. I wonder if Mackie was bulking him up too much. Bernard hasn't looked that quick in AGES.
A few Americans were picking Lacy and almost all Brits were predicting Calzaghe. I managed to put £50 on Calzaghe when his odds peaked at 5/4. They were both about 5/6 until Calzaghe's odds went up slightly. It was similar with Hopkins-Wright. Both about evens with Hopkins peaking at 5/4. Trust me, I pay close attention to these things.
Disagreed Completley. It was a typical B-Hops performance filled with clinches and Hopkins bitching about getting hit in the back of his head. For such a dirty fighter, the second he gets played, he whines to the ref like a 2nd grader crying to the teacher about the school bully. Typical Bernard. And the clinching. I knew this was going to be a clinchfest reminiscent of Elton John's wedding night, but jesus H. Christ, not even I would have imagined the hugfest it turned into. Bernard always looks great against smaller opponents, or one dimensional opposition. Why do you think he punked out against James "Lights Out" Toney. Toney will take his ass to school, as Toney knows every single trick that Hops does and more. Calzaghe, a master boxer also outboxed and outhustled and outfoxed the Old Ass Fox. Hopkins wont do as well against an RJJ he has been avoiding for over a decade. He knows when he is in over his head. :deal
