Where does he rank in the all time middleweight hierarchy? How effictively has he moved up in weight? What are his most important and most impressive wins? Is he overrated? Underrated? How does he compare against other great middleweights like Hagler?
I think he could have been champion during the 1960's. He was pretty good and I'm surprised he can still fight when he's 40.
Maybe it's just my PHILLY bias (I admitedly have one!), but among modern era (Post WW II) I rank him in the top 3 w/Hagler and Monzon and find them largely interchangable. go ahead and bash away!
- Top 6 lock at Middleweight, perhaps an argument for #4. - Pretty well, although I reckon he should call it a day given his age. Considering to fight Calzaghe at this stage is just wrong. - Trinidad, DLH and Joppy. - Not too far behind him, Hagler is the better fighter but Hopkins at his best was very top bracket for sure. Head to head matchup: Hagler close UD.
I think the MW elite (the top 6 i'd say) is probably the tightest and hardest to sort out imo , more so than all the other divisions. You can argue to put Greb, Robinson (on achievements, and when you consider different aspects), Hagler and Monzon at number 1. I would probably say- 1. Greb 2. Robinson 3. Hagler 4. Minzon 5. Hopkins 6. Ketchel You can change the order , but imo they are the very top , the elite of the MW division's history, they emerged as the best of their ers and deserve the top 6 spots. Note- Robinson fought in a golden era and was past his prime aswell - remarkable considering this
He makes the top 5. He is just behind Monzon and Hagler. I think they had a little better competition. I would take him head to head against either of those guys.
i hope this is based on importance. it helped hopkins make more of a name for himself but as an actual victory it means very little. his three best wins imo are johnson, tarver and trinidad.
I havent seen the Sturm-DLH fight, i think the weight of the DLH win (in terms of Hopkins' resume) depends on this. If DLH won it legit , then it is a good win for Hopkins, that would mean that DLH was established at the weight and had done something at MW to earn the shot. If Sturm ws robbed , then you are right. Have you seen it , DLH-Sturm ? Who won it
yes i've seen it a couple of times and had sturm winning by 2 points both times. it was a pretty awful decision. DLH looks very poor and in bad physical shape, he didn't carry the weight well.
I was just looking for it on youtube , couldnt find it though . Do you know a link for it ? I wanna see what i think on the decision
One of the greatest fighters of the last 15 years. Too bad there was no rematch with Roy Jones Jr. That rivalry should have continued and I think it's a fight that's worth seeing. Who knows what happens with Jones vs Trinidad but Hopkins still wants to fight Jones one more time before he hangs it up for good. As for the Taylor fights, I don't think Jermain won both of them and if anything I had Hopkins winning the first fight by 2 points and a draw could have been fair for the second fight.
hops said in a recent interview that he has no interest in fighting the winner of trinidad-jones. it looks like the fight with calzaghe is pretty much signed, sealed and delivered.
I feel he is a touch overated,he is a very good fighter ,who has shone in a division that lacked depth, most of his wins are over less than stellar opposition, and his big wins at 160 were over guys coming up in weight to him,I dont see anything he could do that a Giardello couldnt,a big fish in a little pond imo, though I give him credit for his win at LH,the division where he originally started.
