You see, Bernard Hopkins was one of the greatest American boxers of all time, but failed when he fought tough, Euro-level competition in Joe Calzaghe.

He looked spectacular against regional, American level boxers in Oscar De Le Hoya, Felix Trinidad, and Kelly Pavlik, but failed in his first and only attempt to challenge legitimate European talent.

He also lost to Jermian Taylor, who I admire for his losing efforts to Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham.

STFU! Calslappy? That was a 40yr old benard! A prime Benard would have had Joe on his ass.

He also turned Pavlik into an alcoholic.

You see, this is a common strain among American fight fans. When their beloved fighters lose, they often cite excuses such as said boxer was "past prime", "weight drained", or "robbed."

I have been reading these boards for about 7 years now. I rarely post, however this has to be one of the stupidest posts I have ever read. this site is so full of trolls and agenda driven idiots now its hardly even worth viewing.

"regional and American domestic fighters - Oscar De Le Hoya, Felix Trinidad, and Kelly Pavlik" - 2 out of the three of these are future HOF. Cazaghe was tops as well however to use him as an a reason to push your agenda is weak.

Both Oscar and Felix were world-class amateurs IMO, but I will continue to state with fervour that they were regional, American-level professionals.

Wasn't Hakkar the European champion? And he fought like a *****.

That was a beating and then some. Someone probably should have got Joppy out of there earlier.

Isn't Hopkins one of the most complete fighters of all time? I mean he was a monster in his prime. His in-fighting skills were off the charts. He fu*ked guys up on the inside.

Calzaghe vs Hopkins is simply a bad style match up for B-Hop. I'm not taking anything away from Calzaghe cause he's a tough and very skilled fighter, but just because he beat Hopkins doesnt make him a better overall fighter. I think that a 30 year old Calzaghe beats a 30 year old hopkins, however I also feel that a prime Roy Jones gets Calzaghe hurt in the later rounds and knocks him out even though he would probably be slightly behind on the score cards. Styles make fights, I know thats an over used statement but its true. The Lakers beat the Celtics in the finales but on paper the Celtics are slightly more talented.... Ali beats Frazier twice, Foreman destroys Frazier twice, Ali KO's George in 8. When it comes to Calzaghe and Hopkins I really dont think either man is any better overall then the other, they are both all time greats and fight very differently.

the way he changed his range constantly in this fight was awesome. for every punch joppy missed, hopkins hit him with 3 consecutive shots or more.
