Hopkins getting too much respect here. I followed Hopkins entire career and studied the earlier version pretty hard as I liked some of the tricks of the trade Ficher taught him. Smart crafty guy but he didnt have what it takes to beat Hagler. I may not have caught Hagler from the get go but I started early enough and Hagler just had the style and rhythm that would have been a step ahead of Hopkins all night. Kinda hard for me to put into words here but I got Hagler by a comfortable UD.
This. Although personally I think Hagler might be in with a shot at knocking Hops out. If we compare their resumes, Hagler's is just miles ahead of Hopkins. There's few names on Hopkins' MW reign that really stand out to me, and some of them like Taylor and Jones he actually lost to. Hopkins has Trinidad, Joppy and de la Hoya as his standout wins. Hagler has a ton of names that could hang there. Minter, Antuofermo, Hamsho, Duran, Hearns, Mugabi, (imo) Leonard ... etc Hagler beat better fighters more consistently than Hopkins did with his poverty row of contenders. To me that says something. Hagler also has better intangibles imo than Hopkins.
Hagler would get Tested against Hopkins. Not in a Hearns battle type war but having to overcome the survivalist skill of Hop.Hagler would find himself frustrated and perhaps find himself penalized on occasion with low Blow's and after the bell shots. Hopkins would do his hardest to capitalize on this but Haglers sheer aggression would keep him going to get a decision win. After the fight he'd vow never to fight Bernard again !.
I think Hagler here.. he had the work rate, the arsenal, strong, and tough .. But Hopkins is a junk yard dog, crafty, and I really see him causing Hagler problems .. If Hagler is in war mode, focused, and can handle the frustrations with the jab and grab, he will have to get hop off him and he will outpoint him .. no knockdowns here for me
Hopkins faced roy jones, Felix Trinidad, Keith holmes, winky wright, kelly pavlik, tarver…...just to Name a few!! he Competition is every bit as impressive (if not more) than haglers. Stone Killers compared to Hopkins......that is rediculous!
