I was reading an AP article recently about B. Hop and they made one point that made me do some thinking. They wrote, quite matter of factly, "He is the second greatest Philadelphia fighter of all time after Joe Frazier".

It made me wonder - is it that cut and dry that Frazier is a greater fighter than Hopkins? Frazier's greatest accomplishment is being the first to beat Ali. His second greatest accomplishment is an average length title reign. His third greatest accomplishment is losing twice to Ali in entertaining fights. Those three feats (particularly #1 and #3) have made Frazier a household name.

But, in terms of greatness, is that enough to eclipse the longest reigning middleweight in history, two division champion, and oldest fighter to ever win a championship?

    Thoughts?

Depends what you go for, beating Ali is leagues better than any of Hopkins wins. Hopkins has longevity and depth to his resume and is a more complete boxer

True, but should greatness really amount to a single fight? If Ortiz had beaten Floyd, should he be an automatic lock for the Hall of Fame no matter what happened before or happens after? I don't know about that.

one win in the biggest fight ever made eclipses 20 crap defenses of roy jones old IBF belt . hopkins earned legendary status after he moved up from middleweight, after he stopped feasting on former welterweights

    Ali-Frazier trilogy
    Hopkins-Robert Allen trilogy

    you decide

I ask you this, at Joe Frazier's peak was he better then B-hops?

That is how I figure they look at it.. and although Joe Frazier's is shorter, I feel beating the closest thing to Prime Ali before Ali had ever been beaten shadows the closest thing B-hop has in comparison.

Legacy wise? B-hop oldest man to win the title; but I really feel like his overall Legacy has been hurt by him quitting and acting a fool so many times.. trying to play at benefit of the doubt. Where as Frazier's corner had to call the fight for him past his prime because he wasn't going to stop.

Has B-hop accomplished a greater number of great things over a longer period? Yes he has.

I will also say, I compare Joe vs Ali FOTC to Hop vs Jones 1.. in terms of greatest of all persons involved.

I have Hopkins higher. Somewhere inside the top 45, Joe's more around the 60-70 range at a guess.

Fraizer was fighting over 200lbs. We don't know what Hopkins would look like at 200lbs, he probably would look like a marshmallow. Fraizer by TKO. Hopkins can't even handle guys like Calzaghe or Dawson, let alone Fraizer.

Hopkins and it's not really close.

If we're going to bring up Joe's win over Ali as an argument closer then Frazier is top 3 ATG and there shouldn't be any doubt about that, very few (if any) fighters have a win that good but that doesn't mean they're inferior in their greatness. Although i'm sure there are people on here who'd rate Frazier over Whitaker in greatness aswell.

    B) Never faked he was injured

I'm not disputing the greatness of the win or the people who want to use that as a plus point for Frazier when comparing the two, I was making a point about people who want to look at that win and based off that one win wanted to close the argument as to say 'well Frazier beat Ali so it's Frazier for me'

Shame I was never filled in on the criteria for greatness, I guess we can remove both Ali (wife beater) and Ray Robinson (wife beater) and Monzon (murderer) from our ATG lists :-(
