You never saw Hagler testing himself out at light heavy either :hi:

I agree with the first two points, but Tarver was still at the height of his career when Hopkins beat him. If you make excuses for fighters losing at that stage of their careers, you could do the same for Toney, which would negate the win that defined most of Jones' career.

I don't agree that Calzaghe was "dragged outside" 168 after he'd had such a long battle with the scales that had likely resulted in several inconsistent performances and numerous fight postponements. And while I do agree he was past his peak by then, he was still coming off the biggest win of his career to that point.

At 5'8 was he supposed to?

Anyway, he has wins over future champions at super middle and light heavyweight. And better middleweights than Hopkins has.

He didn`t need to. He was too busy owning the middleweight divison. And he was THE champ, not an alphabet belt holder . I never saw the `weaker` Hagler have to crawl of the deck against a top rated `banger` like the immortal Mercado either ;)

Right on with that ! Hopkins got beat out of the middleweight division by JT. Besides, Hopkins beat another ATG in Tarver to win the crown ? The lt. heavy champ at Hagler`s time was Michael Spinks. Does anyone really think that Hop would be chasing the title with a fighter of Spinks caliber at the helm ? If Mercado drops Hop twice, Spinks wins by murder !

    Hagler was the champ', eventually.

I just don't like it was his record number of defences are brought up. Only a few were for the unified championship.

King owned the division and wasn't gonna let Hopkins upset his apple cart

Not a triangle theory at all.

Hagler is smaller than Hopkins. Less scope to move up in weight. But he did beat fighters bigger than him. I'm not saying 'Hagler was the super middleweight and light heavyweight champ' because his opponents eventually achieved that'.

    And he's the greater middleweight.

Is that all you got ? Why did he need to step up, feign injuries and cherry pick, when he could stay at middle, with his true belt and clean out the division ??? Hop would never have stepped up to face a real lt.heavy champion like Spinks.

Forgot that Hopkins `won` the tournament by beating a blown up welter in Tito ...

I was mainly countering his points about Hopkins faking injury at 45 years old as a barometer of being "not tough"

And Hagler got a boxing lesson by a welter coming off a retirement.

Hopkins is not in Hgaler`s league when it comes to heart and tougness. Ot are you using age as Hop`s excuse ?? Hagler, fighting Bad Bennie, gets his whole eyebrow split wide open by a nasty butt. Goody works his magic and Marvin fight through it and beats Bad Bennie in Philly. Hagler NEVER looked for the refs help when the going got rough.
