Jones never dominated Hopkins...come on. It was an uneventful fight where Jones clearly won (but never dominated for even 1 second) 8 rounds...and Hopkins won (but never dominated for even 1 second) 4 rounds. Its a simple fight to score and both men spent most of it pawing at air with their jabs having too much respect for each other. You know that...no need to exaggerate. And you mention the 0-4...yet fail to mention that one could easily have that 3-1, as MOST people feel he won both Taylor fights (I had him 1-0-1) and some feel he beat Calzaghe as well (I had Joe 8-4 minus the KD...but I also gave EVERY close round on activity alone as well...). Jack, we have gone back and forth on this many times...and you know we both have mutual respect for each others boxing knowledge, but I just cant see how you dont respect Hopkins OR what he has done as a fighter. It just BOGGLES my mind. :huh
Your wasting your time Scar. It doesnt matter that Trinidad was among the P4P elite at the time. It doesnt matter that he struggled to make 147 for YEARS before finally moving up. It doesnt matter that he had just OBLITERATED the #3 MW in the world in the fight leading up to this one. It doesnt matter that he was HEAVILY favored to win. All that matters is hindsight....Tito started at a smaller weight....that is the crux of the arguement for them. Nothing else even computes into their decision making. :-(
Hops was in a big hurry to get to Oscar and Trinidad, not so much of a hurry when he had the Toney contract in front of his intimidated ass.
I do actually believe I'm rating him fairly. It's probably easy to look at someone being so different to everyone else and assume that person is a hater, but I look his fights objectively and analyse how impressive each win was. I have logic behind everything I say on Hopkins. As a fighter, I do respect him. I don't think there have been many fighters who were as good as picknig apart an opponent as him. He had so many easy fights, and those bouts should be the ones highlighted to prove his legacy. Wins over Johnson, Allen and Joppy, for example. Total domination. What I don't like to see is people claim his wins over people like Wright or Tito are incredible, because they simply aren't. There is a list of fighters as long as my arm who would have beaten both of these two. But because they are "Winky" and "Tito" everyone takes them out of context. I look at these fights and think "Wright was unproven and came in visibly fat. Is that really such a strong win over a natural 175lber?". Or "Tito proved he could be outboxed and his mani attribute failed him at the weight Hopkins schooled him at". Maybe I do go over the tp sometimes, but that is only because I think people do but in favour of Hopkins. People take his career on face value and I don't think that represents the true Bernard Hopkins.
I actually dont consider you one the "Hopkins Haters" on here. If you had Presscot at the end of your name...maybe ...but no, you may overlook many things in making your points, but you make your points with respect and at least bring SOME facts to the table (its the ones you leave out or dont take into consideration that confuses me). Your too good a poster to be a hater. But lets take the Winky fight for example. True, he was far above his natural weight...but so was Hopkins (they are essentially 6 pounds away from each other for the majority of boths careers). Should Bernard be at fault because he didnt condition well to 170? Also Winky's game has never been predicated on weight, or speed anyway. He is a defensive WIZARD (the best shell defense of this era bar none) who relies on technique and timing (two things that extra weight would not effect to a major extent...this isnt the story of a power puncher or a fighter who relies on athleticism for wins...its Winky Wright)....this fact makes the arguement about his weight moot to an extent. Then people point that Hopkins landed at a lower % than he has vs past fighters (and try to point THAT out as proof of his decline)...and this is true. But its not brought up that he landed at a much higher % than anyone had vs Winky in a LOOOONG time...which is more of a testament to Wright's aformentioned defensive skillset than Bernard's lack of anything. Also, Winky (deservedly or not...depending on your outlook) was the favorite by a decent margin...was a top 5 p4p fighter...and was 6 years younger. People seem to overlook this as well...Hopkins was/is supposed to be retired and calling fights ringside with Lampley and Merchant...instead he is winning UDs vs...as I stated...a top 5 p4p fighter, who is again 6 years his younger and was the favorite in the fight. Hindsight will ALWAYS be 20/20. But ranking a fight that has already taken place SOLEY on hindsight isnt fair to the fighter who had to take the fight...nor is it accurate to what the fight meant at the time. You can look at fights all you want using hindsight...doesnt make it correct. :good
Bottom line is that.... A. Hopkins got his ass beat down TWICE by Young Taylor B. Hopkins got his ass beat down for his RING belt by Joe C, our hero. C. Hopkins got his ass beat down by RJJ then, and there is a reason he wont rematch him. D. Hopkins WILL GET his ass beat down by Mr. Toney, today or tomarrow or next week if they meet, and prime vs. prime, Toney bitchslaps Hopkins all over the ring at Middleweight, and today, if Hopkins doesnt use Jenny Craig to keep the weight off of his old ass, and stays at 200 pounds, James Toney would do to him, in that ring, what Ike Ibeabuchhi would do to a naked and drugged Paris Hilton, thrown into his cell, at 2am. :hi:
That's pure hate. Ask Jermain Taylor if he thinks he kicked Hopkins's ass in their fight ? You can see by the look of his face and the words in the post fight press conferance that he knew he lost. And Joe Calzaghe was knocked down and won a spilt decision and you call it ass kicking ? get real. Split decisions are not beatdowns, especially highway robberies like the Taylor fights. And to say Hopkins lost to the three best fighters he ever faced is BS. Jermain Taylor is (maybe) the seventh best fighter he ever faced. Winky, Tarver, Trinidad and Delahoya are all better than him. The guy barely beat feather fisted welterweights like Ouma and Spinks. Only reason the fights were close is that B-hop was Killing himself to make 160 and didn't have workrate. Jermain Taylor can't win a round against a 30 years old Bernard Hopkins. Hell, if they fight even today at 170 pounds Bernard kicks his ass.
So I guess people like Dan Refael, Kevin Iole, Max Kellerman and many others are blind... Look, I can see where the guys that say Calzaghe won are coming from, but if he won it was at most by 2-3 points if you give him the close rounds, which tells you exactly that the fight is debatable. Close fight, even Calzaghe himself said so.
You need to have your head examined. And why your at it get an optometrist to check out that serious near sightedness u are suffering from. I'm wondering if he's in your top ten of all time how many fighters have you watched? Nineteen or twenty. I'm a philly boy and a b hop fan but lets be realistic here.
Its obvious that Hopkins is no hero...he's just cashing in his chips and getting as much $$$ as possible before he retires.
People say B-hop never beat a great or very good fighter in his prime. Obviously it's wrong, becuase he beat an undefeated Trinidad, and also an ubdefeated prime Glen Johnson, a very good fighter, both without losing a single round while handing them their only stoppage losses in their careers. But lets ask it in reverse : who ever beat B-hop when he was in his prime (1997-2001) ? Right, no one. And none of his eleven opponents during that time, including Tito, Johnson, former world champions Keith Holmes and Simon Brown and a few mandatory challengers, won more than two rounds against him. It's easy to laugh at Hopkins now, when he needs to grab a lot. But he's 43 years old FFS. Who was better than him at this age ? Archie Moore ? maybe. Even Sugar Ray Robinson didn't age this way. In my opinion B-hop, along with Finito Lopez, is the most underrated fighter of the last 2 decades. People don't like him as a person and also his current boxing style so they don't judge him fairly. Go watch the Glen Johnson fight to see what a fighting machine the guy was back in the day.
Hopkins has beaten Tarver, Trinidad, Delahoya, Wright, Johnson was undefeated for 20 fights as middle champion the man is a legend.
