I think Hopkins is a genuine hall of fame fighter for what he has achieved in his long career but it seems to be overlooked by alot of his fans that he lost his 1st pro bout, lost his 1st world title attempt, got knocked down twice in his 2nd world title attempt, ending in a draw, and that his 2 biggest MW title defences were against smaller fighters in Trinidad who was a WW and De La Hoya who started his pro career at SFW & that he lost twice to Jermain Taylor. Later he moved up to LHW with a good win over Tarver, then beat Wright who was a smaller fighter, lost to Calzaghe who was a division lower, and then beat Pavlik who was fighting 2 divisions lower. In the loss to Calzaghe he was cheating alot and trying to get breaks and points deducted which isnt something hes done before in bouts he thought or was winning. No im not being pro Calzaghe, I thought Hopkins did well to neutralize him, scored a knockdown, made him look amateur but lost to a busier fighter.
On the positive he made a record MW title defences, and is still a world class fighter, who has never been badly beaten. His victory over Pavlik was very impressive, but his victorys over people as big or bigger than him arent like the top names of the smaller fighters on his record, yes theres Tarver, and he gave Glen Johnson his 1st defeat.
Hes still a top world class fighter that deserves credit, but does anyone else feel the same?

I agree with some of that, the fact that he lost his 1st fight means nothing a lot of fighters have lost early in there careers i usually look at a fighter as "what have you done lately" ,i do agree with some of you r other stuff, but the guy is a great fighter and while some of his carer moves do bring up debate, name me one fighter who doesnt.....also be prepared someone will tell you to **** OFF NOOB dont take it personally its like a welcome call here haha:rasta

Hopkins has made a career at beating great smaller fighters. His resume for fighting the top guys his own size and winning is not that great im afraid.

His notable losses are to roy jones, jermaine taylor twice, and joe calzaghe.

Apart from Tarver who did bernard beat his own size or higher?

Trinidad was no longer a WW since he was unable to make the 147 weight limit anymore. The Hopkins fight was Tito's 5th straight fight above the WW limit.

Also, if you consider that Tito is smaller than Hopkins then you have to consider that Pavlik and Hopkins are the same size. You can't have it both ways.

I agree he is a great fighter whos career I have enjoyed, your right the early career defeat dosent mean much but I just always felt that the Ring magazine was always giving him more praise than he often deserved.

Thats why i say some of his career is debateable........Liek people will be saying why did he fight Green when he should have fought Dawson......because Dawson was the bigger threat with less reward and Green is the lesser threat with the bigger reward.

With the Pavlik win Hopkins had grown into the division and had 4 fights at that division to Pavliks 1st, but it was an outstanding performance

Bernard earlier in his career missed out on the huge paydays,he's making up for that now and you cant blame the guy.

I think Hopkins is very smart he will move up to cruiser and beat a limited Green for his IBo crap belt and then try and take on haye or whoever for a heavy title and call it a career.......hey if he can do it more power to him.

would Hopkins have been so revered as an ATG if RJJ had stayed longer at middleweight?

Although he he immense subtle skills,I have never found him to be particularly "fan friendly" in terms of sustained action.
The Pavlick fight was one of the more action fights I have ever seen from Hopkins lately.

    No.

Your post is full of irrelevant bull**** that has zero bearing on Hopkins' ATG status. Lost his first pro fight, Dropped a decision to a prime Roy Jones (when Hopkins was still green), A flash knockdown at altitude in a fight that happened 15 years ago and which he won - none of this is relevant, in any way.

Also, this whole, Hopkins only fought smaller men thing, it should be blatantly obvious to everyone, that Hopkins' style has NOTHING to do with out-muscling opponents with his superior size and strength.

The same goes for Winky Wright, weight and size are NEVER going to be an issue in a fight between Winky Wright and Bernard Hopkins. If the win over Pavlik means less because Pavlik was fighting at a marginally higher weight than what he held belts at, then it should be an even better win for Hopkins, because by that logic, Bernard was "weight drained" and weak from having to make 170. It's just an excuse.

Tarver and Johnson were the bigger men, Trinidad was a proven Middleweight title holder, and DLH was **** at 160, I'll give you that.

Fact is, Hopkins is certainly an ATG, probably the 2nd best fighter of this decade, he has a very good resume, was a title holder for many years, first Middleweight champ since Hagler, linear at Light-Heavy and has only lost close and/or disputed decisions to the P4P elite.
