Golovkin wants 4 fights a year.

If he is able to get at least 3 fights a year, for the next three years, he will surpass Hopkins's record (Right? Someone double check me )

He will be 36/37 when he breaks the record, if hes able to keep his current pace.

You think he can do it? :think

This is what team Golovkin should be focusing on, imo. Stay at middleweight and write the next chapter of middleweight greatness (if G is good enough) in the divisions glorious history.

Obviously its too early to tell.... off nights happen, new contenders come out of nowhere, fighters have tremendous performances, robberies, injuries, ect. But still, Im interested in seeing what some peoples take is on if he can beat the record. Three years can be a long time in boxing.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

Three years is a loooong time in boxing.

    In 3 years

    - Roy Jones went from p4p #1, and a heavyweight titlist, to having lost 3 straight with boxing world asking him to retire

    - Fernando Vargas went from a top 10 p4p fighter entering the Trinidad fight having never been knocked down, to getting knocked down or rocked his next three fights afterwards and looking like a shell of himself against Vanderpool

    - Kelly Pavlik basically became middleweight champion, got dethroned, and became irrelevant, within 3 years.

3 years is almost a mini era in boxing.... I am very interested and curious in seeing if Golovkin will have staying power.

On a side note.... this should highlight just how impressive guys like Mayweather, Pac, and Hopkins are.... guys who have remained at the top level for so long.

Depends , he needs to fight someone three time first , then beat up light middles.

If he can do this then I think he has a chance.

People weren't scared to go up and face hopkins. Tito, de la Hoya, winky wright etc. and some of them are his biggest wins. I doubt any ww or jmw will want to face ggg. Lara would get killed, canelo even worse, cotto is ducking. Andrade I rate but don't see him lasting the distance with ggg.

I think Ouma was G's first title defense.... gonna have to look that up :think

If it was his first, how fitting it is still to this day his toughest one.

Ouma was, and still is, one of my favorite fighters of all time. I remember when he was scheduled to face Golovkin how ****ed I was his people put him in a fight like this.... and while it ended Oumas career he gave one hell of a final fight.

gtta make some defences first, then think about approaching records.

but at present, I'd say no, its highly unlikely 3G will have that longevity of Bernie and will need to wrap up his career at the norm age of mid to late 30s...that's just a few years away!

should be some entertaining fights before he retires though.

And Roman Gonzalez fights 4 times a year too. He should hit 50-0 just a few months after Mayweather, just over two years from now.

Good post Kirk. I'm now of the mindset that he should stay at 160 and try and carve out a historic niche there myself

plus it wouldnt hurt to see Ward's middleweight Klitschko give him the two fingers ;)

There is a good chance that GGG can beat the amount of defences set by Hopkins, but there are some differences.
Hopkins won a vacant belt, GGG was awarded a belt after winning an int title.
Hopkins did win MW titles off rival champs, GGG has yet to do that.
Still yes I think GGG could possibly beat that record, but I dont think it will be viewed as greatly.

I think it is a weak era at MW at the moment (I think that also with SMW and LHW also), and that Hopkins reigned during a tougher period with defences against Eastman, Holmes, Joppy, Echols who I all feel are greater wins than any of GGGs

It largely depends on if he stays at Middleweight long enough to take the record, or if not staps back down after a Super Middle sidestep imo.

Because who's there at the horizon who might beat him? I'd say nobbedy.

To be fair, Hopkins was a master at that too
